Hi, I'm Helen Bradley. Welcome to this article tutorial. In this tutorial we are going to solve some of the mysteries of rotating text in Microsoft Word.

Before we start this tutorial, let's take a look at what it is we are trying to do . What we're trying to do is rotate text on a page, not even necessarily 180 degrees or 90 degrees on the page, but we may want to rotate our text by a different rotation as well. This just doesn't behave nicely for me at the moment, but we might want to rotate our text to 45 degrees or some other value.

And that wasn't easy. In earlier versions of Word from Word 2007 backwards, including unfortunately Word 2007, none of these options , only one of these options was actually available to us. But I'm going to start with Word 2013 because there are tons of options in Word 2013, and then go back to Word 2007 in a minute and see what options you have for Word 2007 and Word 2003.

Now in 2013 there are tons of options. One of them is I nsert Textbox, I mean you can just draw a text box on the screen and paste your text here. Text boxes can now be rotated.

So we can rotate them any degree and you can see that the text with the text box doesn't rotate like the edges, that's fine. Drawing Tools, Format tab, Outline, No Outline and now your text will be rotated but you can't see the outline of the box it's in. You Can Format Your Text Of Course Any text that we talk about in any of these elements can be formatted in the size and color and with whatever fonts, etc.

So a text field is one of your options. One of the other options is a shape, insert shapes and then choose a shape, I'll select that shape here, draw it on the screen, put in my text, enlarge it as possible with the other options and then we can rotate it. So we grab the shape and when we rotate the shape, the text is rotated with it.

This is no longer the case in Word 2007 or Word 2003. The new graphics engine in Word 2010 allo We did this, so we can get it in 2010 and 2013. That is another option.

Each of the shapes can be given text and rotated. One of the options we used earlier is not really that attractive anymore because we have so many other options is WordArt, Insert WordArt. And we just select one of these WordArt objects and then we can enter our text here.

And this can be rotated and also formatted. It can be turned upside down. Like I said, it was traditionally one of the options we had for rotating text because it was just so good at it.

But now we have so many other options that we really don't have to resort to WordArt. Now there is another option that you can use. It's not one that I particularly like, but it's an option and that's just a single table of cells.

This is a table with one row and one column and I've placed my text my in it. With my text I can select the Table Tools, Layout tab and click that text direction option d There are three options to rotate the text in this single cell table. But like I said, this is the least suitable option these days because we just have so many other really good options in Word 2010 and 2013.

But now let's go back in time and go back to Word 2007 because things aren't nearly as happy in Word 2007. Let's go to our text box first, insert text box, draw text box, draw text box on screen and unfortunately this text box, although it is in front of the text, you cannot rotate it. The only thing you can do is change the direction of the text, and this is one of those three options that we saw in a table cell in Word 2013 and Word 2010.

So this is your only option here, you get three versions to rotate your text. Now, if you want one of these, this can work for you. If you want your text to be rotated in this type of 90 degree angular rotation, use them.

It's always been one of the options we've had; it's just that we can't get 45 degrees or anything out of a text box. We can get rid of the edges of a text box, Shape Outline, No Outline. And so you can have text rotate on a page, but it doesn't really look like it in a box.

Now the shape option is really, really sad. We're going to look at this, but it's very, very sad. Here's our shape.

I'm going to put my text in. Well, for a start when I start typing my text, it doesn't really go in. I need to right click and select Add Text.

I can rotate the shape, but unfortunately the text doesn't rotate with it. It just stays behind. So this is just really, really tragic.

Obviously, it's not an option that you would use. So these are shapes in Word 2007. It's also in Word 2003.

So copy shapes. They just won't do it for you. Now let's go back to WordArt, which unfortunately looked really awful in previous versions of Word, but it's a really good way to rotate text.

The trick is, you really want to make sure that you choose a good font. So let's see if one of my favorites Myriad Pro is here for what it is. So now I have my font, Rotate is done in Myriad Pro.

I don't have a color yet but I can get this in a minute. Here's my WordArt object. It's actually behind the shape so let's just get it.

And now I can do things with this text. First I have to get the text change wrapping because it's In Linewith Text by default, but if I choose Square or something else it is now rotated. And unlike every other rotation option we have, this one rotates anyway, we want it to have rotated text in versions of Word older than Word 2010 because the graphics engine was unfortunately not changed in 2007.

Now you are given a few options here. You can choose your shape fill. Now the shape fill of the shape here is actually the text letters.

It is not the box it is in because there is actually no box behind this WordArt. But you you can choose outline, text. You can change the text yourself.

You can edit the text. You can get some good effects if you are just very careful with it and just try to get something that doesn't look like WordArt and actually looks like text. If you want a color behind it, you have to put a shape behind it.

So let's just get a round edge shape and actually rotate the shape. Let's say we wanted our text in a box like this, then I would put my text box in a WordArt shape and then create a shape to make it blend in. I would turn these two to the same rotation and place the text on top of the shape.

Now it's gone under the shape, all we have to do is right click on one of them. Well I managed to get the shape over here, rearrange its order, and send it backwards. So now we have a piece of text in a box rotated in Word 2007 and we did that with a WordArt object and a shape placed behind it.

So you really have to be a bit creative in Word 2007 and Word 2003 to get rotated text. A text box is an option if you are satisfied with any of the three text rotation features offered. Otherwise WordArt and then if you need to place it in a filled shape, just put a shape behind it.

And then we have these pages. Note on the right, we have the option to add a new page, and we have that first page right here. Each page is unnamed until we use this text box here to give it a name.

So in the pre-project analysis we could say that this is something like the first idea of ​​managers. And then I can either use the Add Page button on the right or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + N to create a new blank Page.

Okay, so we can create sections that have names and colors associated with them, and then create pages that relate to specific moments in time or parts of information that are relevant to us.

But there are two other structures that we could opt for. The first and most useful to me personally is the subpage. So when we create pages we can click Ctrl + N again, or we can use the little plus sign that comes up here.

We use the little plus sign here, whatever we want to do, let's say, after the first idea from executives, I'll create a page here. Make a new blank page, and I call this something like a discussion with S. Ryan.

So, Samantha Ryan, the CEO, we had a discussion with Samantha about what she thinks of this team. And after that I come to the little plus sign here, and I'll say this is a discussion with W Randolph. So, Willy Randolph, the CMO, we had a chat with the CMO about what that looked like.

Now the thing is, S Ryan and W Randolph, these two people, you are executives. So it stands to reason that these should be subordinated to the Executive Idea Generation page. All We Have I just click this page on the right and then just drag it to the right as if I were starting the discussion with S.

I can click and drag that down which subordinates the discussion with Marketing Management W Randolph to the new subpage. And then when I create new pages with Ctrl + N I can put that page right there on the same level again. So we can hide all subpages from the main page. But we can't collapse the subpages under a subpage like me. It makes sense to create subpages of a main page so we can see the structure of the information, but here's another tool we can use to organize ourselves in OneNote.

If we right click on the tabs here at the top of the screen, you can see that you can create a new section group, we will create a section group, which makes sense. We're going to group the tabs together. But see how that actually comes about.

I'm going to click New Section Group Test Group here so we can see it in action. Notice that this is a button and that I can take something like budgeting and drag it into the test group. There it is, and budgeting is in now.

Notice here, Facebook Marketing Team Notebook, Test Group. So in the group in the notebook is this budgeting tab. I can use this little up arrow here to go back one level.

And you see how the budgeting tab is now lives within the section group here? I'll take Creative and drag that in and let go. I take Marketing Ideas and drag that in there and let go of o Now all I can see is the pre-project analysis tab here and then I have this group that I can hit the button for and see the other tabs, when I do that Feeling like I can take the Budgeting tab and move it up level, I can put it on the arrow, do you see that right there? Let me go back to the test group, I click on Creative, drag it over the arrow and leave let's go and it's back from the test group. So for me I don't like the idea of ​​my tabs disappearing, but what I can see is this: I right click on this group, choose Rename and I'll name this one archive, and then I'll name another Create a group by right clicking the Section tab, clicking New Section Group, and I'll call this group Future Steps, Creative Stage and Marketing Ideas.

We have the pre-project analysis behind us. It makes sense to me that to keep things tidy, I could drag the Pre-Project Analysis tab, e Archive, and let go, and I can go back a level and see only budget, creative, and marketing ideas. Now let's click that little plus sign here and create a rating tab, so we'll be assessing the quality of our creatives after our marketing goes live.

I don't really need this tab right now, so I can take Assessment and drag into Future Steps. And so I now have two tabs in my notebook that are for the future and the past. So I don't really need to see them now, only those who are really active make sense to me.

If I took a different direction now, and I had a really gigantic notebook about many, many different phases of the business, maybe I would create groups for different clients that I have had. Or if I did this on a personal level, I might decide to create section groups for the different trips I took or the different types of cuisine I kept track of my recipes for, stuff like that.
