Hi this is Karen Turner and today I'm going to talk a little bit with you about Microsoft OneNote.

I showed last time how to use Microsoft's OneNote program to create different sections and I have a couple of sections here on my own I'm just going to show you I have a new section here and I'm going to demonstrate some of the things that are on the tape today so I just click on the tape and here you have a number of different pens with different ink playing colors no matter what color i just pick the blue and i'll show you my very shaky handwriting and look like a five year old, huh, the way you'd normally use it, you would use it on a pad and you would use a pen to to write with, let's see what it makes of it and while it's pretty horrible, let's see if it can read the signs that me as words draw fantastic, it made it so impressive that that's basically what i want to show you that you can use OneNote to take handwritten notes now if you are a person who doesn't type a lot and buy a pad with a pen and make sure it's a Windows-based pattern you get Microsoft OneNote, then you can record your notes and they'll know it's possible to convert them to text instantly if you put something in Having OneNote, if I choose this listing by just selecting and typing it then of course you can erase it and I have other sizeraises here that use the big eraser and you can erase parts of what you are drawing and the like if I just can draw a square on it and show you the eraser i can click eraser and it will erase like rubber wood on paper so it's pretty cool you got a number of different shapes and sewn graphics and you can put a grid on so things can snap to the grid too let's try a lasso picking lasso is just to move everything in their direction and you can of course delete things r arrange things, if I put a few objects on top of each other here and add a little bit of color to some of the objects and put this one in here is a blue color so you can see the difference let's go and if I want to rearrange these objects let's say let's let's go do that all over again and then if I want I could rotate them could erase them and in general these are some of the things that can be done and if I just stop doing that, unless for a second of the things that I totally do found amazing is if i actually type one plus three equal on the screen as soon as i hit the space bar, it does the math for me i think this is pretty amazing so w Obviously it will be very difficult so there you go and pretty much anything you want is a very, very good program and I think anyone who studies would find this useful to put in any notes on whether you are doing this by typing them directly or actually writing and drawing so that you naturally str. aight in the program and so this is a note, if I don't want to format it that way I have the same basic text functionality you'd find in Word, maybe trimmed back a bit, but I could change it and make it a lot bigger and change your colors and so on so we'll go for a different color, blue, let's go and i could also use a highlighter to highlight things i want to highlight and i can cross out things i can create some text if I'm just writing a little, let's just turn the highlighter off for a second color at all, so if, for example, I wanted to start typing here and I wanted to type in h2o, you notice that - it's a bit bigger, you notice that the two are the same size as the h and the O, so if I just choose the two for a moment I can raise the B and that means it will increase that way, or if i wanted to say it's a second in september, it will do that for me automatically when i want to say CO2 for carbon dioxide, what i want to do isis do the e to be subscript instead of superscript, that's all possible if I like the way I have formatted something. I could copy this formatting over there and format it using Format Painter and something else in the program.

The options I have is to keep the source formatting or merge everything to keep just the text or just have it as an image. So if I just keep the text, you'll see that it returns the value that I pasted it in as plain text. If I don't like the formatting of something I could do, I'll take that as a bit of an example, I can just erase the formatting and that reverts back to the default standard text that is Calibri 11 on this computer See what you think and I'll probably do a few different vlogs on little aspects of OneNote, such a useful program

Is there a hotkey for strikethrough?

Strikethrough is available under Effects and the shortcut for it is Alt + K. To quickly recap, the second shortcut is Ctrl + D and then Alt + K. Of course, you need to select the desired text or word first.

I don't know if I can or not, but let's go. I want to keep a to-do list, and one of the most satisfying things about a to-do list is to cross things off the list. So I want to strikethrough, but you'll find that here in the Font dialog box, there is no strikethrough, so I like to use a great keyboard shortcut that's Ctrl + 5.

Now Ctrl + 5, I kept wondering why Ctrl + 5 is crossed out ie 5 looks like an S, right? Ctrl + S is already saved so to strike out Ctrl + 5 adds a very satisfactory line through this element. I also like to keep track of the order in which I do things, so remember the great old keyboard shortcut, Ctrl + Shift: to enter the current time. So if I cross something out, I write down the time and then I can just come here and enter data from A to Z.

Oops why didn't that work? Then sort data; my data has headers; Sort by time and off you go. All right, and then the elements are brought up and I have extra things to do. Now more about the strikethrough up here on the Quick Access Toolbar, if we were to customize the Quick Access Toolbar and go to All Commands, there is a strikethrough icon, amazingly, so there's an icon they could have added to the ribbon if they would have thought it was important enough.

Probably they would have loved to strike things through as much as I did - still there gone, strikethrough, just hit add, ok, and then you have one click access to be striked out right there, we can do this to the 'Home tab 'Something like where it belongs, right click and say Customize Ribbon. What you have to do now - you cannot add anything to a font set, see that it is grayed out. You need to add a whole new group.

So we have a group there, I'm going to move it up by one and yeah we could do the gr. strike out oup, but then it looks really funny. Let me show you what it looks like and find a better way.

So delete it by adding it, click OK and you see, now I get this huge big icon up here and it's because there's only one icon in the group, so it might be better to add a whole bunch of things to this one new group, and the things we want to add are the things that should be in the font group, so we're going to get here All Tabs and then expand the Home tab, find the Fonts tab and we will this one Add group elements. I can just keep clicking add until all of them are added, strikethrough down, and then we can actually take the font element and remove it. Let's see we should rename this to Font2 - click OK, click OK, and now we have our own strikethrough font set.

Of course, every time you add your own custom group they randomly decide how they organize things, and so it doesn't look exactly the same. One of those who are frustrating things with customizing the ribbon, unless you want to get into RibbonX and write some programming code. Hey, I'm going to close here on one more interesting thing.

I have a chart title and what if we want to cross out that chart title? .I will right click on the border and say font where we amazingly double strikethrough the right. This is that secret dialog box that gives us things like capital letters, small caps, double bars; Like Word or PowerPoint, this is a challenge for you if you find myself being able to double cross just one normal cell anyway.

I can't figure out how to get this cool - like I couldn't right click here and say add say to the quick access toolbar. I can't even customize it in the Quick Access Toolbar. Boy, I would love to be able to do things that are in the regular cell font here.

I've been using OneNote for a few years now.

The main reason was to be more organized. You see, I keep thinking about tasks that I have to do. I have ideas for new articles, I need to write down the name of a new app that someone just told me about.

I collected these in different places and none of them got synced. Many of them have disappeared into a black hole. In this article I'm going to share with you some OneNote tips and tricks and how I like to use it. But I'll chat more about it towards the end so stay tuned. Now let's move on to our tips. David Allen, the author of 'Getting Things Done.' A great book by the way, and I highly recommend it if you are interested.

He says you have ideas and are not sticking to them. So we need to find a way to record and store design ideas externally so we can focus on actually getting those things done. This is where OneNote comes in for me.

OneNote is a digital notebook, but it's a lot more than that. I'm sure you'll agree with me by the end of this article. Let's go to my OneNote productivity tips.

Number one, Use hierarchies to organize yourself. A great feature in OneNote is that you can create your own hierarchy structure. There are three main levels, the highest level being the notebook, just like the physical notebook, they can contain many pages are sections.

Think of it like chapters in a book. And finally there are sides. These contain your actual notes.

Let's say we create a notebook for all of your recipes. We can either right click and select New Notebook or click. click add the notebook below.

The sections in this notebook could be different so we can create a section for starters, one for main courses, one for vegetarian dishes, one for desserts, and so on. You have the idea. Within the sections we add the separate pages for the actual recipe.

Here we have a recipe for a wild rice mushroom burger. We have the ingredients, the instructions and we can add pictures and even link where we got the recipe from. Aside from these recipes, I usually have notebooks for ideas for articles with different sections depending on your progress, like brainstorming, researching, or scripting.

And I have a notebook for personal things like shopping lists, vacations, etc. If you need more levels of hierarchy, you can group multiple sections into a section group, you can drag sections into the group. Another layer you can create is subpages.

To use them you need to have at least two pages in a given section. So let's say here I have a page with my meeting notes from Excel conferences, I can make Sub-P Alter with the notes for each section. So I have a piece called Session Notes Excel Conference Bulgaria and sub-pages for each meeting.

To make sub-pages , just click on the page you want to turn into a subpage and choose Create Subpage. It will indent the title. You can even have a different layer for the subpage that says Subpage of a Subpage.

I don't use this like that often, but if you have a lot of notes and need detailed structure, they can be very helpful. In summary, these are the different levels of hierarchy you can have. Notebook, section group, section, page, bottom one, bottom two.

Just start with a structure that makes sense to you, you can always change it or add it later. Number two, use tags to find what you need. Tags are a great way to categorize and group notes that aren't in the same notebook or section in my general article ideas notebook, in this case for Power Query, where I have notes for learning M-basics.

Let's say this is something I want to consider doing this soon. By using the This Note dropdown tag above, I can select various default tags to add to the notes or parts of the notes. So I can mark this with Remember for later, so don't forget it.

In another notebook for my research I have a page to check out this app for a barcode reader. I can tag this note with the same tag, Remind you for the same day later, that is, even though they are in a different hierarchy, they are still grouped and it is easy to find your tag notes later. Let's say you want to review all of the notes that are marked Save for Later, all you need to do is click the search icon on the left here, then either just click the search bar and choose from the tags below be proposed.

Or just type in what you're looking for and select the day you want. You will get a list of all the notes that contain this tag. You can either use the standard tags, but I recommend creating your own tag system through your own custom tags as well.

All you have to do is click Create a New Tag at the bottom here and you can then name it and choose an icon for it Tags like you could in previous versions of OneNote. New ones are always added below so don't go overboard and just keep the number of custom tags limited. So use tags to categorize notes.

There are many uses for tags, just use them according to your needs. For example, let's say you want to keep track of the tasks you've assigned your team members to, or use them to highlight important parts in your study notes. They make it really easy to find what you need, when you need it.

Number three, jot ideas down with sticky notes all over the place. Whenever I'm out and about, I would scribble things I don't want to forget on a piece of paper, then either they were lost or I spent a lot of time searching my back, nothing more. I discovered Sticky Notes.

The Sticky Not's are built into the OneNote app on the phone. So if I just want to write something down really quickly, I just open the OneNote app and click the buttons, Sticky Notes down here and start writing collected Sticky Notes right here. Now when I get back to the office and want to see these notes, go I go straight to the Sticky Notes app.

It's an app built into Windows 10. To get there, hit the start button and type sticky and you will see how it shows up here. You will find it as a separate app on your computer or laptop, while it is part of the OneNote app on your mobile phone and is automatically synchronized so that you always have your notes with you, no matter where you took them.

Number four, extract text from images. Another great feature is Optical Character Recognition, or OCR, which means that OneNote text in an image.This has two great advantages.

Well, you can copy text from images so you don't have to type it in manually. For example, I copied the screenshots into my notes. When I right click on it, I get the option to copy text from image.

I can open a new page and hear the text copied from the picture. The second benefit that I personally use a lot is that I can search for text in an image. I usually collect a lot of information from articles that I take notes on, I also do web clippings and pictures.

When I look for something specific later, I use the search function. The OCR function also searches for the text in the image and displays all relevant information, including images. Number five, focus with Immersive Reader.

A great feature that I like to use when I really want to focus on a text or for proofreading is the Immersive Reader. It is now integrated with several applications such as Word, Outlook and OneNote. When you're on a page, on the View tab, clicking Immersive Reader makes it easier and faster to read.

You can change the settings for text size and color themes to your liking. This is where you can change the font too, and interesting is Comic Sans, a font that might not look appealing in a professional setting but works great for kids and is G-shaped that's how kids learn to write in school. You can also use this to practice reading with your children.

You can also use the play button below and have the text read aloud to you. Learn how to analyze whether a rental property is worth buying by calculating the cash return amount. The voice settings allow you to change the voice speed and select a female or male voice.

We're setting up an Excel template. Personally, I use OneNote. But there are many more functions that can be very helpful depending on your needs.

For example, you can hand draw shapes and then ink the shape, and OneNote will automatically convert them to shapes with straight lines and neat corners can also convert your writing to typed text. I was skeptical because I have terrible handwriting, but it even converts mine. First, use the lasso selection to select what you want to convert, then just click Ink to Text here.

I don't use this feature often because I type faster, but it can be useful if you'd rather hand-write your notes. You can even use OneNote for math problems. You can handwrite an equation, use the lasso selection to select it, then click Math.

Ink to Math above can convert it to typed text. But that's not all, you can actually ask, click Choose an option and solve the equation. And if you're interested, you can even show the stepson how to solve it.

Pretty cool right? Don't tell your teachers. There are different versions of OneNote like One or 2013 or OneNote 2016. But the official version of the app is now only called OneNote.

It is available in Windows. and also for Mac Plus, it's free and it syncs across all of your devices. So, as you can see, there are m all ways you can use OneNote to be more organized and productive.

Yeah, like others, the strikethrough shortcut doesn't work with the new sticky notes. The other shortcut keys work fine for me though, it seems. Bold, underline, whatever.
