How do I apply the depth theme in Excel?
Open the new document and under the Design, or Themes dropdown menu, select and put a check in the box that states, 'Enable Content Updates.' A window will open asking if you want to allow Office to connect to the Internet, select 'OK.'
I'll start this lesson by opening up Excel. When I'm on the Windows 8 desktop, I click the Start button, then click the Excel 2013 tile we added earlier. I then select the blank workbook template and I am presented with a new blank workbook.
If you come to Excel 2013 from an earlier version of Excel, you will immediately notice that the Excel screen is now using very little color and contrast. A very large number of Excel users, including myself, feel this lack of contrast causes more eye strain and is more difficult to work with than previous versions of Excel. Fortunately, you can change Excel's default white color scheme to one with a higher contrast using the new Office Themes feature.
Three Office themes are available to customize the look and feel of Excel. Now let's explore them by changing the Office theme. So click the File button in the top left of your screen, then click Options at the bottom of the left menu bar.
In the Personalize Your Copy of Microsoft Office section, you can see that there is an Office Themes drop-down list. I click the button to the right of this drop-down list to see that there are three themes available: white, light gray, and dark gray. Let's first consider light gray.
So I'll point to light gray, click that, and then click the OK button. You can see that the Light Gray theme has a little more contrast which helps separate screen elements. Now let's look at the dark gray theme.
To do this I click the File tab again, then Options, and then in the Personalize Your Copy of Microsoft Office session the Office theme will be dark gray. I click OK and you can see that the dark gray design is much higher in contrast. This is my personal preference.
I find the higher contrast is a lot easier to work with. Experiment with each topic until you find the one that you like the most. All of the screenshots in my book and all of the screenshots in this article course were created using the Dark Gray theme.
If you choose a different topic, the screen grabs in the book will look slightly different than they would on your computer screen. You may also have noticed that in my version of Excel, there is a cloud tattoo in the top right corner of the screen. This is called the background.
Now the only way to customize your wallpaper is when you're connected to the internet and signed in with a Microsoft account. You will learn a lot more about Microsoft accounts later in Session 8 when we talk about cloud computing. Personally, I find the background function a bit frivolous for a serious business application.
And that's why I always leave it on No Background, but maybe you feel different and want to imprint your own identity on your copy of Office. Now let's change the background. As before, I'll click the File tab and the Options button on the left menu bar.
I can see that there is an Office Background drop-down menu in my copy of Excel, but you won't see this in your copy of Excel unless you are signed in with a Microsoft account and connected to the internet . I'll now click the drop-down button to see what background options are there. And you can see that there are quite a few of them, but in my case I'm going to select No Background and hit the OK button.
And you can see that the top right area of the screen is now free of the tattoo. Now let's close Excel by clicking the Close button in the top right of the screen. And you have now completed Lesson 1-3, Changing the Office Theme.

Hello. This Excel tutorial will show you how to create a custom design in Excel. A custom design is useful when you need to create documents or presentations with a specific look.
For example, if your employer or client has branding elements that you need to use. Once you have created your design, it will also be available in other applications in your Office suite, such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The options for themes are on the Page Layout tab in the Themes section.
There are already several preset themes to choose from, but in this example we're creating our own. We do this in 3 parts. We'll first create a custom color palette, then choose a font, and finally we'll choose effects for whatever objects we can use.

Most likely, your computer defaults to using the one labeled Office. As I scroll down the list of color palettes, you can see the color of my examples change. You can choose any of these, but for this example we'll choose Customize Colors so we can set our own.
All the items that we can change the color for are listed here for us. We just have to decide what color we want for these items. And here the example has 2 basic layout options.
So we have dark text on a light background and light text on a dark background. If we change the color, we will see that change here in our example. For example the dark text on a light background, we can opt for a deep purple and you will see how this text changes as you do this.
For example, we can change the light text on the dark background to light green, and we see that the accents change too. You can change the actual background color. The accent colors are shown here in the bar chart examples.
So we can change that blue to a sunny yellow. And we can keep changing these to change everything we want to see. To create any custom color you may need for your particular brand, simply select More Colors and the Custom tab allows you to enter the RGB number for the color of your choice.
After you've completed all of the color updates, simply give your color palette a name and select Save. And when we do that, we'll see that our sample items have all changed their color here too. And we also learned that I'm not a designer, but this is a good transition on how we can edit our custom color palette.
So let's go back to Colors, select our new palette, right click and choose Edit. And here we can change any of the elements. So maybe let's change our happy, sunny yellow to a more toned down orange.
And then we change our text and the light background to something even lighter. So let's choose a little lighter green. Click on 'Save'.
And that still doesn't look good, but it's easier on the eye so we can continue with this example. To customize font combinations, select Fonts. And these combinations represent the font for the heading and the font used for the body of text in your documents.
So the upper font is the heading and the lower font represents what is used in the main part. Hence, many of them use the same font for both of them. However, as you scroll down, you will see some using a different font for the heading and body of text.
Now if you want to create your own combination, select Customize Fonts and from here you will have a drop-down list of all the fonts installed in your system. So if you already have your branded fonts installed, you can download these custom fonts here. And once you've chosen what you want ... and we're just going to change this a little, just for a change.
As with the color palette, give it a name, select Save and you will see your new font combination listed here in the Fonts drop-down menu. Select Effects to customize the effects for our theme. These concern design elements like our Smart Art example.
Notice how it changes as I scroll through the different options. And while you can't customize an effect right now, there are several to choose from. You would simply choose the one that best suits your needs.
And once you've set your color palette, fonts, and effects, just go back to Themes and select Save Current Design to save your design.
