What is word processing speed?
Words per minute, commonly abbreviated wpm (sometimes uppercased WPM), is a measure of words processed in a minute, often used as a measurement of the speed of typing, reading or Morse code sending and receiving.
Every modern computer basically does the same thing.
I've said before that computers are just overgrown calculators, but how do you get from a simple calculator to playing article games and broadcasting? Broadcasting things over the internet, or even decompressing and viewing the millions of pixels in this article? In short, what is your computer doing? There's an enlarged version of a computer behind me, but we'll go much, much easier. The first one we're going to use is the clock. Each time the clock ticks, our CPU runs through a step in the so-called 'Fetch-Execute' cycle or 'Fetch-Decode-Execute'. These are bits of high-speed memory in which the CPU holds values that it is currently working on. These are: one register that keeps track of our instruction cycle, another that loads our instructions from memory and an accumulator. The last thing we need in our simplified computer is a place to store the instructions and any values we are calculating.
This is RAM, Random Access Memory. We call it random access because it does so regardless of when or in what order the information is read or written. So: this is our computer.
Let's run a simple program. All it will do is count up. The processor has three steps: retrieve, decode, execute.
It'll just repeat this in a loop, that's the only thing actually built into it. So we need some instructions, actually in memory, so we load our program into RAM. The RAM is also used to store our answers, our expenses.
In the real world, these would all be stored in binary, but let's not complicate things now, let's keep them human readable. An instruction consists of two parts. The first part is the instruction itself.
And the second part is usually a memory address. With every clock tick, the CPU does one of three things: It fetches an instruction from a memory address. It will decode that instruction.
And she will carry out the instruction. Round and round in a loop. So it counts up.
We start with a number and keep adding one to it. (Click) Retrieve. A bar line.
The program counter is set to 0 so that the CPU fetches the command at address 0 in the memory and stores it in the command register. (Click) Decode. The CPU decodes the command.
The first part is the instruction and the second part in our case is the LOAD instruction and the address is 6. So we load the value of address 6 into the accumulator. (Click) Execute.
The CPU executes this instruction. It takes the value at address 6 and loads it into the accumulator. In this case the value is 1. (click) Fetch.
The program counter is incremented and the CPU fetches the next instruction in the next bit of the memory. (Click) decode. The CPU decodes the instruction.
This time it's ADD and the address is 7. So we're adding address 7 to what's already in the accumulator. (Click) Run.
The CPU executes the instruction. We add the value at address 7. In this case it is the value 1.1 + 1 is 2. (click) Fetch.
From the next memory location number 2. (click) Decode. An instruction to SAVE the value in the accumulator in RAM Address 6. (click) execute.
Well, note that we are overwriting what is already there, so address 6 now has 2 instead of 1. (click) Fetch. A new instruction: JUMP.
With one jump, the next address, from the one we get is the one in this statement. (Click) Decode. So we jump to address number 1. (Click) Execute.
The program counter is now back to 1. The ability to jump, to loop, and to recursively build instructions is one of the basics of computer science. So: we're back. (Click) Retrieve position 1. (Click) Decode.
It's the ADD instruction again. (Click) Execute. Our accumulator still contains the values from before, i.e.: 2 + 1 = 3. (Click) Get. (Click) Decode.
SAVE again. (Click) Execute.Save in location number 6. (Click) Get. (Click) Decode. (Click) Execute.
And we jump again. (click) Decrypt. (click) Execute. (click) Get. (click) Decrypt. (Click) Execute. (Keep clicking) We are in a loop, counting up by one every sixth clock cycle. (stops clicking) With these simple instructions, our program has no stop command or any way to interrupt it, so it simply increases this value by one (many quick clicks) until the number gets big enough to be possible can no longer be held by the memory address.
How it breaks then ... well, that's a completely different article. (stops clicking) And my fingers are tired.
This is a very fiddly way of programming a computer. In theory it can be, but at this level these instructions are only encoded in raw binary data which is basically unreadable for humans.We can convert this binary file from base 2 to hexadecimal to base 16, at this level we call it machine code.
The next step from that is a symbolic language called Assembly, which is a bit more readable but is still close to working on bare metal. The original 'Prince of Persia' game was programmed entirely in assembly language. This is almost unbelievable to me: carefully figuring out every pixel of the animation and coding it into something that the computer understands almost directly.
Such programming is complex and difficult, and prone to human error, leading to massive security problems. It is difficult to program and difficult to debug. So instead of dealing with the clutter or, well, the original logic of machine code, higher level languages were developed as an intermediate step.
These languages do all of the reading and writing of memory for us, so we just have to focus on what we want the computer to do. So here is my code: Exactly the same instructions, worded a little differently, worded so people can read. I specify a variable, X.
I then write a function that loops endlessly and every time it goes through that loop I increment X by 1. Once I write this code, I pass it to a compiler that does it converted into this original machine code for me. When I run the program it loads into the computer's memory and runs.
If I want to run it on a completely different type of computer, a Mac instead of a PC, I can compile it for that CPU instead. But that still doesn't answer the question of how the computer does something as complex as decompressing and viewing this article. The answer is: speed.
At the speed I clicked on, we ended up executing an instruction on a thread every few seconds, one bit of the system. A modern CPU executes billions of instructions per second - gigahertz - in multiple threads.
