Hello and welcome to my YouTube channel! In this article we see how to fix Access Denied error when starting services in Windows 10. Basically, there are a lot of background services running in the Windows operating system, and if a background service is not running, the associated function will not work as expected and and will always give you an error. To fix this, you need to start the service.
However, if you are unable to start the service due to the 'Access Denied' error, we will see in this article how to fix the problem. Before that, here's a little recommendation: If this is your first time on my Youtube channel, click the 'Subscribe' button and press the bell icon to receive notifications about my new articles. So let's see how to fix this problem.
So I am on the desktop and as you can see the sound is not working on the system due to the 'audio service not running' error. Usually to fix this problem I have to start the Windows Audio Service by going to the Services snap -im. I just go to the Services snap-in by running the 'services.msc' command and trying to start the Windows audio service for the sound to work on this system, but when I try to start the service I get this error, Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on the local computer, Error 5: Access is denied.
Here's next to learn why this error occurs and how to fix it. Usually the 'Access Denied' error is related to permissions. If you do not have the necessary permissions to perform an operation, you will encounter an 'Access Denied' error.
At this point I should mention that the account I am currently signed in to is already an administrator account as you can see it belongs to the administrators group. Even after logging into the administrator account, I still get the error message 'Access Denied' and in this case I need to correct the permissions for the Windows Audio service. This problem can occur with any service.
However, the solution is done in similar steps. I'll show this using an example for the Windows audio service, so first let's open the registry editor by running the regedit command, click Yes in the UAC confirmation prompt, in the registry editor window go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SYSTEM> CurrentControlSet > Services> AFFECTED SERVICE, ie Audiosrv in this case. When you are in the Audiosrv registry key, you will see the following window.
Now right click on the Audiosrv button and select Permissions. Here on the 'Security' tab you can see that there are some groups or usernames listed, but if you find that the 'Administrators' group is missing here, I am getting this error because my account is an administrator account. So I just hit the 'Add' button here, enter the administrators, and click Check Names.
In the event that you are unable to add another group such as the administrator or your account, you will need to take ownership of the registration key using the article mentioned on this card. I have now added the Administrators group and give it read permissions. Read permission is now given to the Administrators group.
It is recommended here to add your own user account for these permissions as well. I'm just typing in my account name after hitting add and hitting verify names, and my account is now being added here and I've already given it read permission. The administrators have read permissions, my account has read permissions, I also give the administrator group full access to this key and now finally click on Apply and then on OK.
So that’s done with the permissions here. Now let's just close the registry editor and go to the services snap-in by running the 'services.msc' command.
And again, in the Services snap-in, I scroll down to the Windows Audio Service, the service I'm having this problem with. and try to start the service. This time the service starts without errors and the service is now running.
Also, you can notice that the audio icon is now playing. In this way the problem was resolved. So you can use this method on any service that is giving you an 'Access Denied' error.
