Hello, Welcome to All About Web This is the article tutorial and how to make a sitemap Here is an example of a basic sitemap It's for a fictional company called Monday May Design and a few things to consider about this sitemap is that you will find that there is a top level of boxes in this sitemap and this is usually thought of as the first level navigation which is usually the main navigation for a website. Note There are boxes below the top level The first level of boxes These usually represent what are known as sub-pages and are sometimes referred to as the second level pages, so another detail is enabled for the note on the sitemap we have a series of letters and numbers that you can use in the 'Services' section. The first field is labeled C and the fields below are labeled C one through six.
This is called alphanumeric labeling and this is really helpful for you to organize your sitemap and you can refer to it with this alphanumeric label rather than the name of the page, so why not? Creating a sitemap a sitemap is really the blueprint for the entire site and it is important not only for you as a designer-developer but also for the customer to see how the site is organized. So let's look at a sample website that this top navigation is what that first level would represent, if we roll over the first level you'll see that we have sub-pages in several of these sections, and those sub-pages would go through this second one Level so the second level of boxes is probably the easiest to sketch out your website first so it's a lot easier to organize your sections of paper before you start drawing them so what I usually do is do one little table of contents, and you can see that here you could play around with the sections I put the alphanumeric caption on and only to notice that this is actually an abbreviated version of the other existing site let's see how we would draw the sitemap so here I have a template made in Illustrator and some of the first few posts I'm sure you got your sitemap labeled so make sure you have the title, many times you want a version number and then a date and this is just a template so you know I am just going to be using this as some sort of guide I can delete things that I don't want to use, and I could go in here and start changing the names of these pages to reflect my table of contents so you can see that this is where I started putting my eyes on my cheeks think the next is slip So I go ahead and create on this top level the I would represent all of the main navigation so let's go back to our outline, we have all of one through the eye in order so I want to be able to draw it, to display them, then to display them under my main sections I'll start by drawing my boxes for my subpages. So if we go back to the eye section for example, there will be Luminess eyeshadow and pearl eyeshadow so I can come back here and change that to glowing pearlokay.
You can go ahead and use the selection tool to select these boxes if I don't need them and just delete them okay and also the same thing with the lines you can change their size and if I want to make additional boxes I can use the selection tool, copy and paste oops and start adding additional subpages to mysitemap so this is kind of the quick and dirty site map creation process and I hope you find this helpful

- Hello everyone and welcome to a new series on my YouTube channel. This series will document the process of just designing and rebuilding my website from start to finish when it is launched. I had originally thought about putting all of this into a article as well as an overview of how I built it in the end, if that ever happens, but I feel like I can show you more of my process along the way when i am making this article in pieces for each part of the process.
You'll be able to get a closer look at how I work and, yes, just learn more of it behind the scenes and hopefully learn more too, so. I hope this sounds good to you. In today's article, the first in the series, we're delving into the planning phase; planning the sitemap, planning the pages I need to design.
This is a really important part of the process. It may not be the funniest part of the process, because it's not that you arrange pixels on the page and create cool designs, lots of thought and planning that goes into it in advance. Before you get to these stages, but I think it's just as important, and just as important for you to see, so I look forward to planning with you today.

I can't remember now if it was 2014 or 2015, but I just know it was a while ago. And that's why the design needs to be updated a bit. I've changed my branding slightly since then and this website just doesn't really fit my needs anymore? really fits what i need from a website? I also wrote on a blog quite regularly, on my old website.
Not for the last year or so, but I was before. I've decided that I'm not going to post this blog on my new website. Which, by the way, I will create in Webflow.
I think it's more of a visual way of building a website that you actually don't need to know how to code it from scratch to build it in Webflow. And they have a really great CMS too, it seems really powerful so I'm looking forward to trying this out if you have a way to get all of your WordPress posts to Webflow, but I just decided I don't care will take care. I will leave this in the past.
There are a couple of posts I might take to my new blog that I'm going to be doing, which I'll get into in a moment, but yeah. For the most part, this site is being completely redesigned. I want my new site to be a bit more flexible.
I want it to do a few other things as well. The first is that it's my content hub. That was kind of my idea for the previous one, but it didn't really turn out that way.
It was mostly just the blog posts and links to my latest ones on the homepage, but I want my articles there, podcasts there, blog posts there and all together be searchable so if you want to know something on a specific topic I can create a page for it with this article, this blog post, oh and this podcast that you should listen to on that topic. So yeah, the first thing is to bring all of my content together, because at the moment everything is just separate. The second is of course, because I'm a designer, I need to have my portfolio on my website, and it's not just my design work that I want to have a new portfolio, I also want to like a speakers page.
Like a portfolio of my public speeches and workshops to try and attract more of them. I also plan to start blogging again as I mentioned before but this time a little different topic. I really want to write about the background of my business.
So, posts about what it's like to start an LLC and be with working with an accountant, income reports, maybe something I'm thinking of doing, these things don't particularly fit my YouTube channel, which is more design-centric, in my opinion, but hey there are still things I want to post . So I think it will be good to write about it. So this will be on my new website.
And finally, I'd like to finally bring a store to this website. At the moment my online shop is on a separate platform. It's a completely different brand too, but in the future I want to bring that in and have everything in one place.
I won't worry about that for now. So, we're just focusing on the content and portfolio side of things. With that in mind, let's start planning.
And the first thing I'm going to do is write on this page, actually I'm going to write content or tune in. Because these are the two mindsets of what people want to do when they come to my website the way I see it. They are either looking for content to learn about something from me, or they are interested in hiring me for a specific cause.
With that in mind, let's start planning which pages I will need as part of the site. Obviously, the first is usually a homepage. I feel like I want a site that is a content hub.
So I'll just write content. That might be some categories that will be listed and suggested as Almost like the playlist I have on my YouTube channel, but instead of just being articles there will be blogs and podcasts as well. And then, as part of the content, I basically also need three different templates.
I will need audio, article and writing. You're probably wondering how I became a designer if I can't even draw a box properly, but hey. Thats how it works.
I also go to need my portfolio. And in it I'll have something like an individual project. Of course I'll need a template for that too.
I'll also include my speaking page here that I mentioned. Then there will be the basics, this is an about page and probably a contact page as well. Actually, it would be a good idea for me to have a form on my website for my portfolio review series as part of the contact us nk.
For now, my instructions for you are to send me an email with a specific subject line and the Add information so I can review your portfolio in this series I do on YouTube? But not everyone uses the correct subject line, so it doesn't go to the right folder in my inbox, and not everyone gives all of the information I need. So, I think I have some kind of form on my website that you can just fill in your details and submit that will make the whole process a lot easier for everyone involved. A page on my website that is currently getting pretty busy thanks to a very popular article is where you can download my screen printing guide.
Basically there is only the article and a form and you will get the instructions there. That's how a lot of people come from this article. I was thinking of having this page as part of this new website, but I think what I'm actually going to do is screen printing as a category in my content, here so it will be a part of this way the form is on this one Page so that you can download it and also articles or blog posts or whatever I wrote about screen printing in between I should also write ...
I just add it next to it anyway. Like a category page? The content page is home to all of the content, and then a category page is that playlist. I guess where audio, article, is written.
I am also thinking more about this contact page. I think I'll have a freelance form submission too, so if there's a project you're interested in working with me you can fill this out with information about the project. I also want a simple page template that I can pull out anytime for freebies.
That's something I like to do like In the middle of logs, every now and then, it's easy to make a giveaway. And to do that, I have people fill out a form that I can randomly pick the winner from So, yes, a simple page that I can duplicate and create a new giveaway at any time will be really helpful. Think about what Anything else I want to bring on my current website, the only page I'm really not considering here and not adding is my newsletter page.
So, I only have one page about signing up for my newsletter. I don't think I'll do that because I honestly haven't been very regular with sending out a newsletter lately, and I think instead of having newsletters as the reason people sign up, I would prefer it instead have a form on each content category page that you can fill out there to receive a specific, I don't know, PDF opt-in, something or other that I'm going to create. And then they can get emails on that particular topic in general and they'll also be added to my list when I send out a newsletter I think I should really postpone this.
I don't know how to move the ngs in this app so I just delete it and write it again. But I think home should be seen above all of these other things. Because my homepage is going to be the hub of everything related to home like, I'm actually going to remove freebies from it.
But everything else I think will come from the home page, and the home page will be designed to guide you to the right thing. With these two things in particular, think of: content or the attitude of me as the main thing you are looking for. So this is the first decision I make. (laughs) Let someone meet when they get to this page.
That's the content, that's the mind-set of me, and those two pages kind of go together. That seems like a lot of work now, doesn't it? As if there were a lot of pages that I have to design, starting with so that I don't get overwhelmed, at first I'm actually just going to create an MVP of my homepage. So not all of these subpages will be there.
It will just be a homepage that links to various things. So, she has to link to my YouTube, social media, I think I won't even have a contact form on it, at first I just have my email address, biography, and maybe instead of building a full portfolio, I'll link to there have my dribbble and I'll make sure I update that a bit because I don't do that very often either. This way people get access to my content, they know how to contact me, they learn about me and see a little bit of my work sites, just now.
That means I can get my new site up and running. In designing this page I will probably be able to develop a design system for it and also be some kind of brand for my website that will make it easier to design these other pages. And in general I think it will be a good start for the project. (laughs) So this is my very confusing plan for my website.
It's pretty simple, but it's really good to think about what you might need instead of starting halfway through and then the project will keep growing from there. Especially this piece of figuring out what people are going to be coming to your site for, I think it's really important to come down. So, if you have a website project that you are working on, I really recommend doing this step first just to find out exactly what pages are needed as a client, you have to do this anyway to delineate the project and how much design work is required for you.
But it also really helps me see it and know what work is coming up, and I think I will be able to tackle this in stages. Hope you found it interesting to see anyway, and that was useful to you in some ways. And that you look forward to a new series from me that will redesign my website.

In this article I will show you how to create a sitemap in Microsoft Word using the smart graphics tools available. First up, I'm going to change the page layout as I think it could be a little better in landscape mode and I might just add a bit of a heading let's change the style to say formal and we'll go to the sitemap fine. To insert our Smart Art, let's go to the Insert menu and Smart up there.
Now a sitemap is a hierarchical object, so we're going to choose Hierarchy and choose Organization Chart because that just seems to work very well with sitemaps, so I'll hit OK me I'm going to make this box a lot bigger and I'm going to start deleting some of those boxes in it so I just hit delete until I only have one left and we'll start with our homepage so do the name of the page and the name of the file that we have for this page, when we are done we add a form to level navigation so homewha tever appears in our main navigation, in these cases it may be home the next will be services, so services dot html add another form after it will becontact us and foul will be called touchpoint html and sorry i want another let's add another form after services about us call it about p unkt-HTML Always use descriptive names when renaming things for the web just make that a little bigger so we can fit in a little more, so now I'd like to add some pages that link from our service page form below because it's a layer is under our top level navigation. For example, let's say we are doing a web services business so we may have a web designer page for web design html and then click Services again to select it because you want to add another page linked to our services Page, so that the form of advertisement underneath is a web design. Maybe they host sosteam point html and hit home services EO, so SEO dot html, all right so this looks a bit nicer because i want to add some pages that are linked to our page about us, so I'm going to change the layout of this to a left-hanging layout as we're much, much better so now I can add something under the About Us page, add a shape below, let's just say the company's history and we'll vote again about us and another Form below and this could be the team the team point HTML 'and of course the story call the story HTML and I'll choose my About Us and go hang to the right because we go that's a lot nicer layout and we're doing a few more Things to make it look a bit nicer We can go upstairs and change the colors We can design it so the different colors on different layers are pretty cool look and we can add some extrastyles that's pretty cool I came across this before the flat scene that's another nice one over on the left when my polish catches up looks pretty good so let's just go for the polish and go It's a nice chic site map for or your website created very easily with Smart Art in Microsoft Word.
