Hey guys Matt here tonight I have a little article for you guys that can help you figure out what's causing your hard drive to be so active, what makes it crunch all the time and keep your hard drive lights on all the time I'm just going to show you really quick a built-in tool in Windows that somehow can help you diagnose where the problem is coming from.
So it's pretty easy, if you just right click on your taskbar here and hit Task Manager start Task Manager go ahead to Performance and then down here is a button called resourcemonitor and when you open up resourcemonitor it can open be to the overview tab for you or whatever the cpu like but you want to go ahead and hit hard drive and now i can see that stuff is really nice being eaten up by my hard drive i can find out you know that it will be up here, it's called processes with disk activity and then it looks the same down here as it looks here I can sort by you, you know what's causing the whole disk? Activity so things cause most rights at the moment I see a lot of system nothing I can do about it but the search index is certainly possible I really don't need the search index or running I don't need to constantly look for things on my computer from knowing where everything is so if you don't use the search on your computer too often, like me, you can disable this service or use it right here with the built-in that is causing this built-in resource monitor to find out that causes the search to work a lot of disk activity, let's turn the search off and I can go straight to my services to do that and I just double click that system32 search indexer that's what we see up here turn it off then we hit disabled and then you can go ahead and restart this PC without this service activated 7-Box If you don't nac every day h looking for something, there is really no need to have it. Okay, I rebooted so let's take a look at things now so that at this point I don't hear any hard drive activity resourcemonitor go to disk and immediately we don't see any more we don't see the search index anymore error none of this happens so that is a lot of Disk IO that we just cut out by disabling a service that we really weren't using, so if I expand down here we can go ahead and look at the next culprits and with a lot of them you can't do anything, you know that writes to the registry. A lot of these are just systems written like a System Restore, but you can actually use that to be kind to find out what is really eating up the hard drive and where to go from there, so it's a bit limited there You rely on some of the reports that only run in Windows like Services dot exe and a lot of them are necessary so not too many things that you can really disable, but let's go ahead and give you an example if I can do something like adisk defragmenter would keep running all the time.
Maybe someone screwed up their configuration, we're like what's going on looking at it and we should start to see this is probably doing some reeds and stuff in a few minutes. High enough that it doesn't do a lot, it's like that now we can see that the SVC Host Defragmenter Service is really really really chewing up a few reads in a second yeah right there you can say okay, this is up, it should not running, and you could just go ahead and close it and you know you're getting rid of that process, so I hope this helps you figure out what's killing your hard drive days ago at work it was really effective figuring out that it was just there was a process that flushed a few disk cycles, at least that was it for this article
