When I was 12 years old, I loved browsing the internet for programs to customize the look of my computer. It was 2008 and I had a 2005 laptop with Windows XP. I wanted to make it look like Windows Vista that I saw at a computer store and was amazed because it looked like that.

I found a lot of things including a site called CrystalXP.net. CrystalXP has a couple of programs called 'BricoPacks' that use a simple installer to add new themes, wallpapers, and more.

The one that made XP look like Vista is called 'Vista Inspirat'. Or maybe the 'Vista Inspirate' is pronounced, I have no idea. I dont know.

Anyway, sometime this year in 2017 I decided to try CrystalXP again. Unfortunately the site recently went down so all I can do is show you screenshots from archive.org which the stylesheets do not save.

I have the . read warnings more thoroughly now that my english is a bit better than 9 years ago i meant it doesn't work on 64 bit versions of windows. At the time I didn't even know what that meant, but I installed it with no problem, obviously because I didn't have 64-bit Windows XP I didn't notice it back then when it was mentioned that it wouldn't work with already modified versions of Windows .

It mentions 'Gold' but obviously does not mean 'Gold XP 2016 by Computer Worm' as it is known today; more specifically, it also mentions 'LSD'. I had never heard of it before, but I thought this was a strange name for a Windows XP modification, so I checked. It is a French modified version of Windows XP.

I found this forum found Post dated November 2005 that describes the features and modifications, and this article dated August 2006 that rhetorically asks if it's for drug addicts. Apparently this version is supposed to be faster, especially on low-end systems. It took me a while to find a download for it, but then I did.

This is version 3.7 which I think is the latest one they have made. It mentions a fix for Pentium 4 processors with Hyper-Threading, as well as true dual-core processors that weren't low-end at all in 2006.

It's a little disappointing, but it includes a lot of modifications that I've never seen in other XP mods, which is why I wanted to make a article about it. Unfortunately it doesn't have any crazy LSD-like visual effects, but I think it does it under the hood, you'll see why. The first part of the setup is largely the same as any French version of Windows XP.

But then we get that. All of these improvements are mentioned. Back then, SSDs were more primitive and not popular, so the only way to significantly speed up your computer was to use these sketchy modifications of Windows which are not a good idea as you will see later, and suddenly this command prompt window pops up warning you it doesn't close and it asks if you have a Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading or a. have dual core processor.

The first time I said no because I have a Core i7, and even though it was Hyper-Threading, I didn't think it would be virtualized, but the OS refused to boot after that, so I had to reinstall it and say yes. Then you will be asked if you would like additional wallpapers and fonts, so of course, I said yes. Then this strange window popped up and asked me to create a user account.

And the reason they warn against installing CrystalXP BricoPacks on Windows XP LSD is because Windows XP LSD is already included! This is the Vista Inspirat theme that WinLSD plastered on the login screen, but is otherwise about the same as the Brico pack, except for the start button. But if you liked the Crystal Clear Brico pack, you are out of luck. The setup mentioned that it incorporated the latest updates for your maximum security.

That's nice, but what about future updates? Well, automatic updates are automatically turned off, and Windows Security Center is also turned off. Oh the police! Are you okay here? I'm deactivated - that doesn't sound like maximum security to me! At least you can easily turn it back on. In the start menu there is this WinLSD section that contains 'the services', which sounds kind of weird in English.

But in French it's perfectly normal, in fact the All Programs menu is called 'The Programs'. Anyway, this section includes a lot of registry changes to re-enable some services like Windows Security Center. But it gets better.

I wanted to install the unofficial Windows XP Service Pack 4, install the Service Pack 3, install some more updates and allow the POS Ready patch to receive security updates through April 2019. But this warning comes up saying that I have a modified kernel, what is supposed to be this optimized kernel for Pentium 4 Hyper-Threading. Even the screensaver tells you, 'It's optimized!' So I thought of just gradually updating Windows with Windows Update.

Some updates were installed but most of them failed without explanation, including Service Pack 3. The reason is for the same, this third-party kernel broke almost every update. And all that for a 5 seconds faster start? I don't think that's a good idea.

Obviously, this operating system was designed for more experienced power users, but even then, an unpatched system connected to the Internet was putting your computer and files at risk. If you like modified operating systems, install a Linux distribution. Don't mess around with Windows as you will often get side effects like this.

The way LSD is plastered almost everywhere on this operating system can be a little unsettling. It doesn't affect me personally, but I mean, do you really want your computer to boot up with a huge 'LSD' font on the screen and a picture of a syringe? Let's end this article by destroying this virtual machine, let's get in Brico package on Windows XP install LSD. There are probably English versions of Windows XP that have these kernel tweaks too, but I haven't met them and I doubt they have a more interesting name than 'WinLSD'.

That was my little one Adventure with it said I think up-market versions of Windows are best because they don't block updates, and if you want a modified operating system you should install a Linux distribution instead. Still, WinLSD was certainly interesting and taught me something old and new at the same time. If you have any thoughts, suggestions or questions, please let me know in the comments.

Thank you for watching.
