Hello everyone, welcome to this article! Let's see, quickly and in brief, everything you need to know to start using Microsoft Visio Professional 2016! Please leave us comments to improve our next article tutorials! Microsoft Visio is professional flowchart drawing software , Diagrams and circuit diagrams in a business environment that has several ready-made drawing templates with an intuitive workflow.

Let's look at all of the major tools to work with. When you open Visio, the 'Recommended' page appears with a list of several new documents using different types of templates: from business flowcharts to architectural objects and technical projects Go to Blank Drawing and select either the Metric Unit or the US Unit. The new Visio drawing begins with a blank sheet of paper, possibly with rulers and grids that you can show or hide using the View tab at the top.

These are used to draw more accurately and will not be rendered in case you print or export your work. Also on the Design tab, use the Orientation option to freeze the page vertically or horizontally, and use size to adjust the page size, between several standard page sizes, or a custom one by going to More Page Sizes ...

After correcting the properties of the page, you can start drawing with the Visio tools. A Visio drawing consists of three main types of objects: the shape, the connectors, and the text. The shapes are objects that are used to represent a theme, component, or symbol.

This can be very simple, for example a rectangle, circle or curve, but it can also be a computer, a motor, a pump or an electrical transistor. These are the main topics of your project. The connectors are simple wires that connect two or more shapes together.

These are fundamental to showing the relationship between the shapes and making the subject clear. Text is simply used to describe shapes and add notes and annotations to make your drawing clearer. When you start drawing, it's always better to start with the shapes.

On the far left is the Shapes panel, which gathers all the different shapes available by default in Visio, all gathered in different sections called stencils. Pick the topic that interests you, find the right shape, then just click and drag on your page to import a copy. You can also create completely custom shapes.

Use the Rectangle button at the top of the Tools section to draw a simple rectangle on your page. You can also use the right arrow to draw circles, freehand curves, and arcs by clicking and dragging on your side. To review your drawing carefully, remember to zoom in and out by holding down the CTRL key and using the mouse wheel, connect them by drawing connectors with the Connector tool.

When you activate this tool and move the mouse pointer over the existing shapes, they will show several points called connection points. These are anchor points where you can start drawing by clicking on your wire and dragging it from one shape to another. This creates a connection between the two shapes that can be adjusted properly by moving and dragging on the blue node.

Remember, Visio will help you draw. It doesn't check that your connections are correct at all. So double-check before printing or exporting your drawing.

Prefabricated shapes, which come from the standard stencils in Visio, are supplied complete with their own connection points. However, when you create your own new shapes, they do not initially have a connection point, so they cannot work with the connector tool. To add and manage connection points, use the connection point tool.

When this tool is activated, you are not working with the shape or the connectors, but with the connection points on them. If your cursor shows four arrows, move the cursor over a connection point and click and drag to move it. The associated connectors also follow.

To add new connection points instead, hold down the CTRL key and click the shape path. These are shown in pink. You can also add connection points to curves and connecting wires.

After you've created your custom shapes with their own connection points, you can save them to use whenever you want. You can make your own stencil by going to More Shapes, New Stencil. Drop your own shapes there, then right click your stencil and go to Save As to rename and save it.

This way, you won't have to create your own shapes in the future. Once your basic drawing is created, you can add annotations using the text tool above. Click and drag on your drawing to pin an area of text, which is the basic outline that contains all of your text content.

Enter your text and select it to edit from the Home tab: customize the font style and size, color and distribution. Click outside the text box to apply all. When you create text in this way, it is completely independent.

However, if you double-click an object you can add text linked to it, which is very useful when you want to add captions. That is, if you edit and move the object, its text will follow too. Now let's see how to edit your objects on your page.

At the top, under the Home tab, you can use the Pointer Tool to manage and edit all of your objects. When you click on a shape, connector or TextBox, select it and several nodes appear on it. Click and drag the object to move it; Use the white nodes to scale and the rotate icon to rotate.

Under Shape Styles, use Fill to add fill color to the selected object, or use Line to adjust the outline color, width, and line style. Use effects to add great effects like glow, reflection, and shadow lead wires. Use line to change color, width, style, and add effects via effects if necessary.

In addition, if you right click on the connector, you can make the connector completely straight or even curved. To edit the text associated with other shapes, you can either double-click the object, or activate the Text Block tool to just select it; to cut, copy, and paste an object, just right-click it. To undo your last action, use CTRL + Z.

As you draw, Visio helps you position your objects correctly. For example, when moving an object, you can only move it horizontally or vertically by holding down the Shift key. Visio also, by default, aligns your pointer to the grids or parts of them.

To ignore all snaps, hold down the ALT key while dragging. You can regulate the snapping settings by going to Visual Aids and opening the Snap & Glue dialog box. You can also easily insert pictures and tables in Visio.

Use Pictures on the Insert tab to import a picture. You can customize and edit it as shown with the shapes, but you can also customize the way the image looks by going to Format under Image Tools. You can correct the brightness and contrast, add any contours, or crop the image if necessary.

To add charts instead, use Chart on the Insert tab. This will use the Excel interface to edit and organize your chart and its data - check out our graph article guide for Excel 2016 if you need additional help on this! Let's see how to save and export your drawing from Visio! To save your drawing, just go to File and then Save As ...

VisioDrawings are saved in .vsdx format. If you save this type of file, you can open it later to edit it again.

If you want to render your drawing into an image, simply select an image format from the list, e.g. B.png or .jpg.

If you want to print your drawing, go to File and then to Print. A preview will appear on the right hand side showing you how your Visio project will print. When you want to print your drawing, use standard page sizes to get the best match between your drawing size and your printer.

If you want to save it to share online, go to Export and save your drawing in .pdf format Save and export your drawing, all white space inside your page will also be rendered white. For this reason, unless you are printing the drawing on a standard page, you should use the Fit to Drawing feature to fit the page to your drawing.

Find Fit to Drawing on the Design tab under Size. When saving and rendering, remember that no object is selected. Once you've selected an object, Visio only exports that object and ignores the rest of your drawing.
