So what if your keyboard breaks? How can you type on your Mac, at least temporarily, until you get a new keyboard? There is a way to do that. Then what happens if your trackpad or mouse is broken. Well, there is actually a way to control the cursor using just the keyboard.
Both techniques are well known in an emergency. The simpler problem is when your keyboard isn't working; all you have is your mouse or trackpad, but you need to be able to type something. So go to the Apple menu, System Preferences.
Go to Keyboard there and turn on Show keyboard and emoji viewer in menu bar that you get this menu bar icon here. You can click on it and Show Keyboard say Viewer, you should get that floating keyboard here that you can now use to type, or you can have it called up by going to Accessibility then Keyboard and then turning on the Accessibility keyboard if you are here don't see a keyboard, maybe you you have set up some custom control panels. You can create different panels here.
Click the little settings icon here and you can see custom panels. You can go with Keyboard ANSI to display the standard keyboard, or you can have others there too. You have tons of options here too if you need to use this for an extended period of time.
You can change the appearance. You can make it semi-transparent. You can change the toolbars.
You can have it hide when you're not using it. All sorts of different things like that. Once you've got the keyboard set up, you're ready to type anything.
It just takes a little longer, but it works in an emergency. So typing with the cursor is an easy solution. Which is harder when you don't have a pointing device.
You only have a key holder. Then you have to activate something called Mouse Keys. Doing this without actually having a mouse or trackpad is quite difficult.
But there is always a way. The first thing you can try now is is that you may have already set something up here where you can hit the Option key five times to toggle the mouse buttons on. You can use the mouse buttons to control the cursor with the keyboard.
So try pressing the Option key quickly five times. When you see that you know you have them, now you can use the mouse buttons to control the cursor. You can go to the left with the U key, to the right with the O key, down with K and up with 8 as well as with the keys diagonally out of i to go in a diagonal direction.
If you hold down a key, it moves faster. To turn it off, just press the Option key five times again. But what if you didn't have that attitude before? Pressing the Option key five times does not work.
You can use the Options command and then F5 to bring up the accessibility options. Now you can use the Tab key to switch to Activate Mouse buttons. Hit the spacebar to check it out and now the mouse button is activated.
Now you can use the same keys on the keyboard to control the cursor. What if neither of these two types of mouse button access works. That means you've disabled both keyboard shortcuts.
You have to switch to the system settings to activate one of them. One way to do this is to use the Ctrl key, not the Command key, but the Ctrl and F2 keys to activate the menu bar. Then you can actually control things with the arrow keys.
But often it doesn't work. Lots of people report that it doesn't work. Sometimes you just have to press the Fn key to activate F2 to really be F2.
Sometimes it just doesn't work at all. A more reliable way to get to the menu bar is to use Command and Shift and then the question mark key, but note that the Help menu is selected. Now I can use the left arrow to switch to the Apple menu, the down arrow to SystemPref erences, and then Back to get to System Preferences.
Now I want to search because you can see that the blinking cursor is already in the search. I want to look for keyboard shortcuts and I want to go to keyboard shortcuts and press enter me to the keyboard system preferences. But what is important is that it goes straight into the shortcuts.
If you're just looking for Keyboard, you'll land in the Keyboard section. You wouldn't be in shortcuts go to the left, down arrow to accessibility, then tab again to go to options, now I can point the down arrow, this is where I can turn on the keyboard shortcut for show accessibility when it isn't is already activated, just hit the space bar and now it is activated. Option Command 5 will now work.
No matter how you do it, once you have the mouse buttons enabled, you should make sure you go to System Preferences and then under Accessibility & Pointer Controls go to Alternate ControlMethods and click on Options, then make sure you press Option k Press ey five times to toggle the mouse buttons on and off as this is by far the easiest way to toggle them on and off. It is important to turn them off as you will not be able to type with them, move the cursor with the keyboard, turn them off. Enter them.
Then just turn it back on. Apple has this handy page for more information on using the mouse buttons. Here you will find diagrams that show you which keys go in which direction.
If you have a numeric keypad, you can use it to control the cursor as well. There are special buttons for controlling clicks. So i is on the normal keyboard and 5 is on the numeric keypad to click.
Using zero on the keypad or M on the regular keyboard are both for holding the mouse and for releasing the mouse that you are using. Also note that there is an additional shortcut to turn on the mouse buttons if your Mac has TouchID. You can just three press them a wireless keyboard and mouse You can still plug a USB keyboard or mouse into your Mac, and almost any USB keyboard or mouse will do.
So maybe you have one in your closet or you can borrow one from a friend or neighbor until you get a replacement.

>> It was very important to us in the development of Windows 10 that this is more than just taking handwritten notes, signing your name or circling something on the keyboard in Windows, so I want to show you a little how it works. By default it behaves Your pen in Windows is like a mouse, so when I hit the start menu or scroll through the various apps and tiles I have, click and drag is just holding down and moving your pen across the screen. He'll act like that mouse.
Now if I want to right-click something on the barrel of my pen, that flat edge here, that's where I have this button. I'm going to hold down that right click button and then tap anywhere on the screen. That will do the right click wherever I want.
So I have all that nice added functionality. But where it really shines is what we call the handwriting input field. Now I have opened a Word document for our service description with Contoso partners.
I have a description and it pulsates. So now I need to write something I could spell right here on the screen. However, I'm not going to do this because I actually want to type with some typed text.
So if I want to keep using my pen as a mouse and selecting things, this is the point on the 'Draw' tab up here, I'll hit the 'Select' button. This will make my pen act like a mouse so I can move my cursor. I can even select multiple lines of text.
You'll notice it when I select These lines of text are automatically inserted into the handwriting input field you see here. If it didn't show up automatically, it's very easy to bring it up. All you have to do is tap in a text field or use your stylus to press the keyboard icon at the bottom right of your screen.
When you do this with your pen, you will see handwriting input. So what I'm going to do here is write something at full speed in my normal handwriting. My normal handwriting is absolutely terrible by the way.
Check it out. Wow, this is really bad. But it has.
OK. Now you can see that my handwriting understood it wonderfully. If I scroll back I can see all of the text I wrote.
Surface could either be a proper noun or of course just a normal noun. So here, I want the option Select in capital letters. As with your smartphone, these beautiful suggestions are shown to you at the top.
So I choose 'Surface'. Now it has been entered. If I want to split a word into two parts I can draw this little symbol underneath and split it up, or I can draw this nice little U shape and combine it again.
At this point, I could also use my Surface eraser to erase specific individual letters or even an entire word. I could also cross out a word with my pen just like that. If I've spelled the wrong word, I can just write about it.
So I can write 'his' and then those letters will be corrected. If I want to do it 'to' again I just write above and it will instantly replace those letters. This handwriting input field is not just a function of a program like Word, but it can be used anywhere on the entire computer.
This is your keyboard. So if you want to use it to surf the web or write a new email in Outlook, it is more than possible. All you have to do is click the keyboard icon down there on your screen with your y pen and start typing.
Now you've seen how I accessed the handwriting input panel by pressing that button, that touch keyboard button. However, if for some reason you don't see this icon below, here's how to turn it on. Hold down the right mouse button.
Click your pen button to right-click the blank area in your system tray at the bottom of your screen. Once you do, you will see the 'Show touch keyboard button' option in this list. someone who prefers handwriting more often will always have it available and at hand.
Make sure your cursor is blinking like a regular keyboard first. The cursor must be blinking to be able to type. The ability to use your own natural handwriting tool so you don't want to communicate whatever you want to do right on your computer.
