Before we dive in, let's just say that we are trying to grow, there are several ways you can help us by subscribing to this channel and sharing this article with your friends, so let's talk about the Mac settings that you disable - So on your Mac, we go to the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen and just tap on System Preferences - The first thing we're going to do is disable unnecessary login items that could slow down your Mac - These are background programs that are running and often installed when you install new software. And a lot of them are just going to slow things down because you never use them and you might not even know they are running. To do this, in System Preferences, tap Users & Groups, and then tap Login Items.
And on my c computer I can see that I have six of them. So backup and sync from Google, I want to hide this, but I want it to be there. aText, Spectacle, both great software.
But this ZoomOpener is a article chat app, but I don't use Zoom anymore so I can just tap that minus sign and it's gone. And now the ZoomOpener will never run in the background of my Mac again. Here in the upper left corner of your Mac screen, you'll see the menu bar icons, which Apple officially calls Status Menus. These are small icons on the right side of your menu bar that perform a variety of functions. So whether you call them menu bar icons or status menus, they are the items that appear in the upper right corner of your menu bar.
Usually these are menus. You can click one such as I can click Time Machine here and it will bring up a menu, just like the menus here on the left side of the screen. But that's not always the case.

For example, when you click Spotlight, the Spotlight menu appears. Clicking Siri will activate Siri and clicking Notifications will bring up the NotificationCenter app you are currently running. So the symbols stay the same.

You can look for others in the rest of System Preferences. For example, under Sound, you can add a volume icon there; there are actually two in Keyboard. One will be found if you look under Keyboard Settings, you could Show Keyboard and Emoji Viewers in the menu bar and you can see them appear here.
However, you can also go to Input Sources and there is one for Show Input Menu Get a little American flag because I chose the US keyboard. If I were to add more keyboards here I could easily switch between them using this StatusMenu. Sometimes third-party apps like I installed Backblaze here also have the option to add a menu bar icon here.
You could see this option exist and add it to the menu bar. But sometimes apps are not displayed here in the system settings have the option to add a menu bar icon here. Most apps don't have that.
But some, especially those that are some kind of system extension, sometimes have a status menu that you can add are hidden items in this status menu e, when I click the speaker icon here you see that I can select an output device. However, if I hold down the Option key and click the exact same icon, I get a slightly different menu that also includes the input device See for bluetooth Here's getting some basics for all of my bluetooth devices. But when I click on the option, I get a lot of other information as well.
The same goes for WiFi and many of those other status menus, the notification icon here, which is always in the top right corner when you click Do Not Disturb with the option. If it's grayed out, you can see that you turned Do Not Disturb on and mentioned that third-party apps often add menu bar icons. Some third-party apps are just that.
They just add a menu bar icon to give you extra functionality. One way to find these is to go to the Mac App Store and look for menu bar, two words. Apple has a shop here to go to, and they list a bunch of apps that do.
Some of these are apps that have some functionality and have a menu bar icon like 1Password, Fantastical, Day One, journaling software and a few other things. This is where you can get information about your AirPods in the menu bar. Here is another one that gives you free space Here is one that will bring your contacts to the menu bar.
This is where you can set timers in the menu bar. If you just look at the results for the menu bar, you will find others too. All sorts of menu bar apps that do all sorts of things that could be useful to you.
Now there are apps too that will help you reduce the clutter in your menu bar by hiding some of the items from different ones. One is called vanilla. Another is called a bartender.
Another is called a Dozer. There is also one in the Mac App Store called Hidden Bar. I installed it to demonstrate it.
Here, when I click everything, everything on the left is gone. So I could move some of my menu bar icons to the left here and then click here and those would be removed. This is how things get cleaned up.
Then I can click on it to display it. You could also control the status menus using the keyboard only. To do this, first check your shortcut keys.
Go to System Preferences. Go to Keyboard, Shortcut Keys, then Keyboard. Look at the last item.
Move focus to Status Menus For me it's Ctrl F8 and I've turned it on. I marked it there. Now to use F8 you may need to hold down the Fn key on your keyboard, depending on your setting here.

So let me try I'll do Control F8. You can see it select the first status menu. I could use the right and left arrow keys to switch between them.
I could use the down arrow to open the menu and continue with the down arrow and then back to select one or escape to exit. So here are a few final tips. One of them is the spotlight icon has a special function.
When you click on it clicks, spotlight search comes naturally. You can drag this to another location on the screen. If you want to return it to its original location, just click and hold it and it will reappear.
This last tip is the most powerful. It's kind of an expert level. When you run the Script Editor, an app that comes with your Mac that allows you to create scripts in JavaScript and AppleScript to control your Mac and various applications, there is a special feature in the Script Editor Settings , which allows you to display the script menu in the menu bar special script menu here.
You can also choose View Computer Scripts. So scripts that are shared between users. Then you can click on it and you will get all of these different scripts, some of which come with your Mac, some of which of course you can create in the Script Editor to do all sorts of things.
You can actually create scripts in the Script Editor to launch apps and perform all sorts of different functions and then access it right here as a menu bar icon.You can do that in System Preferences using the exact name of the menu item.
