Hey guys, Phil and I have a little tip for those of you who are starting to learn Japanese.
You may learn to read it, speak it, and maybe even handwrite it. But if you are American and have an English keyboard or something like that, you might be wondering 'How do I type it?'. And this is how it works, you need an IME that is an input method editor.
And there is one for Windows that is built into Windows, but it's not quite as good. The one I actually prefer is from Google. And so of course you can get it for either Chinese or Japanese, get it from Google.com/IME and just click the Japanese input from Google and the page is all in Japanese, but it doesn't matter, you just have to click on the window press here below.
It's pretty easy. Once you've installed it, you'll see a little ENG next to the clock in your system tray. You just want to click on it and you can choose Japanese, or an easier method is to just hold down the Windows key and hit the space bar to toggle to Japanese.
The trick is, you might still see a letter A down there instead of actually typing in Japanese. So now I've rearranged it and start typing, but it still shows English letters. So if you see the small letter A on it or something you want to click on it or sometimes you can just hit Alt and Shift and that toggles it back to Hiragana too.
And once you enable it, it's easy to type in any kind of Japanese words. As long as you can say it, you can just type it in romajilike su, shi. And let's go.
Suppose you want to type a word in katakana. Like my name, Phil. You would type F I R U and it would print out as ふ ぃ る.
Then hit the space bar and you get it in romaji and you get more options too. So when I type in my last name it gets printed out as ノ ラ ン and when you press you get a ton of other options in case you want to spell it differently. So I just keep it.
like that. And again, if you want to write it in kanji, say sa ku ra and hit the space bar and we'll get it in kanji. Or press saku ra again and you get to the various options.
And that's pretty much it for typing. Suppose you have a kanji that you don't know how to type. You can actually draw it.
If you right click on the sign next to your watch, you will be given an option called Handwriting. That appears and you get this little space here where you can actually draw the character you are looking for. Of course, you can draw such hiragana characters and then just choose the one you want.
And hit delete. And of course, if you want kanji characters, you can draw those too. And that's pretty much it.
There are definitely some other options and of course there are tons of fonts you can use. And I've found that it doesn't always work in all programs like my twitter program. I don't think it will work there.
But it works in Photoshop, and like I said, there are a lot of different fonts to choose from. And I am going to leave some links in the description of some websites where you can download some free Japanese fonts. And that's it.
If you liked this article, give me a thumbs up and I'd love to hear a comment below. I love to see them. And talk to you next time.
How do I install missing fonts?
- Step 1: Copy or download fonts installation files to C:\Windows\Fonts folder.
- Step 2: Double click the fonts installation files to apply the installation.
- Step 3: If fonts already exist, replace them and confirm to install.
Pictures are missing too, but we did that in a previous article, I'm going to close that, and you'll also notice that ... it was that horrible pink color that was missing.
So let's do that in our tutorial. In this article, someone sent us a file ... but the fonts are gone.
So if you follow me through the files exercise ... open '02 Existing Work '.
Open' Green at Heart Prospectus'. It says missing links, which is what we did in a previous article ... so have a look Now we're going to deal with this problem, missing fonts.
Well, this can be a super simple solution, or it can be super complicated. Super simple means it is a font that is actually on Adobe's Typekit. Typekit is the name Adobe calls its font Libra and what can happen is it can load and it senses ... you don't have that font on your computer, but it says ... 'Hey, I have Roboto Slab Lite found on Typekit. .and because you're a Creative Cloud member and great ... should I download it and install it for you? And you can click 'Sync Fonts' and life is good.
Where life is harder, it's If it's here there is no sync ... and it says I can't find it anywhere.
So you need to click on 'Find Fonts'. In our case, it shows Roboto Slab Light, which is missing. And what we can do - I can click 'Sync Fonts' here because it's on Typekit ... but you may not have that option, often two things .
You can replace it with something else ... because sometimes when you're on Mac and PC ... say someone used Times New Roman ...
Times New Roman is what a PC calls Times New Roman Mac it for some reason Times.Same font, same attributes. So du mi I have to go and say - actually, Roboto Slab, I'll go into my list.
This is the list on my computer, and maybe you just find it, you can find it. It could be the Pro version, so you might have ... you have Roboto Pro or something else.
And you can replace it and keep an eye on it ... and see if the font changes, it could be exactly the same.
Or you could go through I need to go through and say ... 'I don't have a Roboto Slab, I'll just be using Arial.' And I'll press 'Change All' And it will go through and switch every time you use Roboto for Arial.
And that's a sad day because Roboto Slab is nice. And Arial is not nice. Another thing you could do is just ignore this and go on Click 'Done' I'll go, that pink color ...
I know there it is. So I got 'W' on, off. And it goes, that terrible pink outline color.
Let's say I'm just doing a text check. I sent it to someone and they just do a quick check of the text, they miss their fonts, don't worry just leave them out, send them back to whoever it originally belonged to ... who made the font and it comes back to life, if that still doesn't fix your problems ... you'll need to install the font.
You will receive a package document from your designer or whoever made it. It's going to be a ZIP file, and inside there is-- Let's look at one, I have an existing one. So let's take a look at our 'desktop'. 'InDesign Class File', we created this zipped file earlier.
So someone might have sent you this ... and in here are the 'Document Fonts', you find it is there and all you have to do is double-click it, depending on what program you're using , I'm on a Mac ... and I can just click on fonts and install them.
If you're on a PC it's a very similar process. What I did for this class is in your practice files ... under 'Missing footage 'there is one called' Roboto Slab '.
Here are all the fonts we need, in this case it's Roboto Slab Light. If I install this now, life should be fine. Go back in here, come to life.
If you don't have this font and it wasn't shipped to you ... you will likely need to purchase it.
Some fonts are free, many aren't. If you want to buy it ...
I can recommend myfonts.com, this is where I buy my fonts. Fonts aren't cheap, it comes down to a lot of work on these fonts ...
So let's say I need a font and I have to buy this vintage font that was made. You can see here, this one is going to cost me € 27 I mean it has a lot more characters and whites ... then you will pay more.
But this is a good place to buy. But there are plenty of other places, choose what works for you. Hope one of these options helps you find a missing font is Tutorial Series.
