Dezz Asante here from TechMuzeAcademy and today's quick tip is an answer to a question I recently read in the Gear Sluts forum and which I want to address here today because it's a question I get a lot Forums. He says that I've just started using Cubase version 6.5 on my Mac Book 2.4 GHz I5 with 4 GB of DDDR3 RAM tracks and my project is about 2 minutes long, my CPU is running at almost 90% so when I do by this stage my project becomes sketchy playback and recording becomes impossible.

I'm recording at 44.1 kilohertz and I'm not adding a million plugins to the tracks or anything, but I'm using Amplitude 3.0 on every track.

Should my Mac handle Cubase better? I would have thought so. Yes, that is a question that comes up a lot and basically there is a simple solution to it. Note that the Amplitudempl 3 in particular, and many plug-ins like this one, are very, very CPU hungry and will therefore devour cycles like crazy and only a few instances of Amplitude at any one time can really pull your system down.

So what do i have? A little short session is finished today. Just a little funky jam that I threw up for this demonstration and I want to play you what it is ...

First of all, I'm going to walk you through what's going on. We have superior drummers on one track, and I'm dragging this super up so you can see it, superior drummer, when you don't have it, is a fantastic little drum synthesizer so I took care of the drums. I.

Really, we only have these 5 tracks in the mix. I don't have any plug-ins other than the ones I just showed you in this session. So, let's hit play and listen to what this sounds like.

Okay, obviously not very pleasant. And if you look at the CPU meter down here, you can see it fluttering away and also cutting off at certain points. In fact, it's a pretty consistent spike in CPU usage.

So, I'll stop doing that. So how do we solve this problem? I mean the computer I'm running this on is a quad core 2.66 gigahertz with 6 GB of RAM.

So you'd expect 5 tracks to be a breeze in your mix. Well, there are a couple of things you can do. The first thing to look for is to go to your Hardware Settings under Device Settings in Cubase and look at the I / O Buffer Size settings.

Latency is an indicator how the input-output buffer is set up. When I press the control panel here, I can see that my buffer size is 64 samples. This is now a very small buffer size and this is great to give you very low latency performance while recording your instruments.

It's good to have the buffer as small as possible, but once you have some tracks on the screen you need to open that buffer. Now you see what's right going away when I open this to say 512 and I close, my latency goes up to 12 milliseconds. But that's not a problem with playback.

So if I close this now and play it again. And if we look at the CPU usage ... we have a nice clean playback and we just have a nice dance on the CPU meter, nice low down and everything sounds great.

A little clip there and if I go back in and set my buffer even bigger let's say 1024 and hitokay bring that back up, the CPU is now even less used and those tracks play fine, ok ay! So that's that First thing to check, if you've found that your buffers are already pretty wide open, you may have some tracks and plug-ins running and having trouble playing the playback smoothly and cleanly anyway, then are a few other tricks that you can do. So let me go back and reduce my buffer size to simulate the problem. So I'll cut this down to 128, the latency drops to 3 or less than 4 milliseconds, CPU c We dance away again and we get the occasional clip and when I hit play.

These mishaps appeared again in our playback. OK! So what do you do when your I / O buffer is maxed out and you are still getting that type of performance. There are a couple of little things to look at.

In Cubase, if you are a Cubase user, Cubase has a very cool feature called Track Freeze. So when I freeze a track, it essentially exports a mix of that track with the printed effects and then disables the plug-ins. And it all happens in the background, so everything on your screen looks the same, but the plug-ins have been disabled and an exported version of that track with the effect in it will replace what is playing.

This is a fantastic feature of Cubase. I'm not sure which others support this as well. But if you don't have Cubase or a Freeze function, you can manually export each track to my file exporter and sorry again for those of you who are not Cubase users.

You have to poke around in your DAW to see the like. ut to find where that works, but I'm going to export an audio mix now. Cubase also has batch channel export, which is a fantastic feature as I can run all of these tracks at once.

If you don't have a batch channel export then what you need is to solo each track, export them individually to your project's audio folder, and just import them back into the session. In Cubase they made it really easy so that I can actually go in and get my instrument tracks and my audio channels and I'm going to save them and bring them back into audio tracks and then export them at the same bit depth that my project is, which is 32 bits. And I just call this, I don't know, Bounce.Okay, for this demonstration I'll just pick a random location to save.

Here let me do this. I put them on the desktop so I can delete them later. I create a new folder and I'll call it an unnamed folder.

Sure, sounds good, and we'll save there and I'll hit export. So this takes a moment or two and w what it will do is print each of those tracks with the guitar tone, the superior drummer tones will bring them all back into the session as audio files. OK.

So now there is what I can do, let me just make this out of the way for you, whether I can actually remove these traces all together or turn off the plug-ins. I recommend that you take your software instruments, disconnect them ... which essentially turns them off in Cubase.

Okay, I turn off the plug-ins on these channels. Turn off the plug-ins there and then I take all these traces and put them in a new folder and we are going to call this folder backup. Now I can get this folder out of the way, move it down, shrink and make it inconspicuous and now we are ...

Before I do that, I want to mute them. So I grab my mute tool and just mute all these tracks at event level, OK, and now when I hit play ... you can see that the CPU meter is very low and the playback is on nice and clean and fluid and everything sounds exactly like before this export.

The same goes for audio. Modern computers often have more than one audio source. And USB devices can also be their own audio device, the source is currently active, you guessed there is no audio.

If you don't know which device is right, but you think your speakers or headphones are plugged in properly, you can just toggle each one until you get a tone. If you're using a standard 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, you'll want to plug it into the green port on the back of the PC. Or on the headphone jack on the front with the headphone symbol.

If you're using a USB audio device, you can plug it into any USB port and just have to select it as the source, which you can find by tapping the speaker icon in the lower right corner of. Click your screen. And then select the correct audio device.

We can see here that these Logitech USB speakers are showing up in my device list. If audio has never worked on your PC, the most likely reason is missing audio drivers. Drivers are the software that the drive is hardware.

While Windows can detect the device without a driver, it doesn't know what the device is or how it's being used, and no sound will play. If you didn't install the correct software drivers for your audio device, audio just won’t work. A failed or incorrect driver installation will most likely result in no audio either.

The easiest way to check if a driver is installed is to look into the Device manager to go. You can type device manager in the search box or hit the start button, go to your control panel and type device management, you will find a section called sound, article and game controllers. Your audio device (e ) should appear here.

If there is an exclamation mark next to a device, then something is wrong. You can right click on the device and click Properties to check its status, here we can see that the device is working properly, Windows will also tell you if the driver is needed or if there is an error. If there is no driver, you can right-click on the device and select Update Driver.
