- Today we're going to take a look at your internet router.

Specifically, I'll show you how to install a VPN on your wireless router and use it to connect all devices in your network. Go through the settings of this router I just bought, an Asus RT-AC66U. But even if you don't have the exact same router, don't click away, I promise you can still follow me All Things Secure. My name is Josh and I personally run a VPN on my routers so I can use my Apple TV and each other device at home without installing apps or worrying about simultaneous connection limits.

To make this tutorial as helpful as possible for we will start with what is hopefully the simplest option and then work our way through the various alternatives. Also, before we log into this router here, I'll assume you've already set up your own VPN server, or you have a subscription to a commercial VPN service, I'll be using ExpressV PN as an example here, although any service, that you have subscribed to works. If you need to buy a VPN, you can go to VPNsetupguide.com, an affiliate link that will take you to the ExpressVPN homepage.

OK, let me start with the bad news. If the router you're using is the one your internet or cable company provided you with as part of your internet package, you probably can't set up a VPN here, in which case you'll need to buy a third-party router like those made by Asus, Netgear, or Linksys are available. I've included links to some routers that I recommend in the description below, or for those of you who don't want to dig into it, if you go to Allthingssecured.com/flashrouters you can buy a WiFi router in just a few clicks, which requires no setup and can be run right out of the box with your favorite VPN service is by far the easiest way to use a VPN on a router.

If this works for you, just go to the url and select the router you want. For the rest of you who already have a router, the first thing you need to do is find the sticker on the router that tells you exactly how to log in as an administrator below or on the back of the router, and this is what you will see on my older router give you an admin and password on the stickers like you see here, don't be surprised if it's a series of numbers, the most common of which is 198.168.1.1.

Either way, make sure your computer is connected to this wireless router before you begin so that you can log in. I'm now here on the computer connected to my Asus router, both via WiFi and an ethernet cable, while doing this setup. I have opened my internet browser, I am using Firefox.

kb2919355 won't install

You can use Chrome, Edge, Safari, whatever internet browser you want, it's entirely up to you, but here in the address bar, enter the router's IP address which is 198.16. could be 8.1.1, this is the most common or the url address as you saw it on the back of my Asus router, the Router.Asus.com is you will either create an account like this or you will enter the credentials that you found on the back or side of your router.

Great, now we're logged into your router's backend admin panel, it looks like this at this point. You probably look different, and that's fine. They hope that your router has built-in VPN functionality.

And that means it's set up to accept the VPN configuration. And usually when it does, you can find a VPN tab here on that left hand side like I have here. Sometimes it's on top.

Sometimes it's hidden behind the 'Security' tab, but what are you looking for this VPN functionality. And if you don't have these, we'll cover what you should do next, but let's just pretend you do for a moment and we'll look for a VPN client. Now you are going to add profiles.

These profiles will be different servers that you will have access to. And when we're using ExpressVPN like I'm using it right now, and when you sign in, a setup page comes up. Now this could be for any server or service you use, whether it's NordVPN, Surfshock, ExpressVPN, IPVanish, or one of them, it will be a setup page and if you scroll down look for manual configuration.

I realized there was a router option here, but trust me, you'll want to look at the manual configuration to give you the most services. Some don't, but most services give you both OpenVPN and PPTP connection options. The difference is that OpenVPN is a bit more secure while PPTP is faster to download, if you are streaming content, gaming or anything like that, you are likely I want to establish a PPTP connection here and that's what we're going to show you.

So if I click on that PPTP and let's say I want to connect to New York, I'll copy the address to Das and I'll go ahead and say in the description that this is the ExpressVPN New York and then I'll paste that server address . And then I'll go in and copy and paste my username and password. Perfect, we'll leave this on Auto and click OK.

Now I've set up this profile for the New York server with PPTP and if I wanted to, I just click Activate. It will take a few seconds, but you will see this check mark on the left, which indicates that I am now connected to the VPN through my router and any device that connects to that router is also using the same encryption through this VPN- Server directed that is the obvious benefit of using a VPN on your router. Perfect, now we are connected.

Let's disable this connection and set up an Ope nVPN because adding an OpenVPN connection is a little different. So go back to ExpressVPN, click OpenVPN, and let's do Chicago. So I'm going to create a Chicago file, and what will happen to most of the services is they will give you a file that you will download, it's an .ovpn file.

So you download this file. And then we need to copy and paste the username. So I'm going to use and say this is ExpressVPN Chicago.

The VPN server, oh sorry, go to OpenVPN.ExpressVPN Chicago, paste this username, paste the last code, and then I have to go in and look for the file that I downloaded, then upload that file, and that will all import the OpenVPN settings it needs to have so you don't have to worry about configuring all of that manually. Once the upload is complete, click OK.

And now we've set up our OpenVPN server and hit Activate again, wait about a minute, and once you see the check mark that says it's connected, you're good to go or to go. Perfect, we are connected. Now, using Asus or a number of other router backend dashboards, you can easily set up a number of different servers in different countries and whenever you are ready to change your change server that you will be able to access and simply disable from one and activate it to the other.

So it's not quite as simple as using a VPN app that lets you switch servers very quickly and easily. You have to log into the router backend. And if you don't disable it, this router will keep a connection to the VPN at all times, which you might want, but if not you will have to sign in to disable that VPN setting.

Now let's talk about what happens when you log into the backend of your router and find that it doesn't have VPN functionality. You've been looking for that VPN tab or somewhere to add a profile with VPN configurations and it just isn't there. This is the case with many older routers and when that is the case there are still a few things you can do which is to flash your router.

Flashing a router changes the operating system from what was included in the box to something like Tomatoor DDW-RT, which I'll show you in a moment, so go to their website and click Downloads. You can search for your specific router to see if it supports that router. And you will see that my router is actually supported.

So click on it and download the file that is associated with that particular router. Once I have that folder or file in my Downloads folder, I go back to my router. You're looking for what's probably known as management, firmware upgrade, and then you want to upload the file you just downloaded from DDW-RT or Tomato or whatever.

Now I want to give a quick warning, I won't do it now because I personally like my Asus backend and it has VPN functionality so there is no reason I have to change the operating system. That could be something that hurts. It could mess things up.

So if you don't know what you are doing, or you are sure what you are doing, or you don't care about accidentally messing up your router, I would be very careful in doing this routeand flashing your router. Like I said, one of the other options you can do is you can buy a pre-flashed router by going to Allthingssecured.com/flashrouters.

And you will be taken to a website that gives you a lot of different options for routers, not only are there different brands as you can see here, but different VPN providers as well. So you can buy the type of router you want with the different budgets available and then it's already flashed and delivered straight to your home already set up with your VPN provider, so this is another option to choose from if your router doesn't have one Has VPN functionality and you're not entirely sure, or you're not ready or unable to flash that particular router. OK, now that your WiFi router is enabled, any dev ice that connects through that router will be over running the VPN server.
