Hello, this is Gary from MacMost.com. Today I'm going to show you several different ways you can log into your Mac even if your keyboard is broken.

You want to enter the password to sign in, but your keyboard is not working. How to enter the password when your keyboard is not working. Well, there are a couple of different methods you can use.

Of course, if your keyboard is broken, you'll want to have it repaired. If it's a MacBook, take it with you and have it repaired. Just getting around and being able to sign in once can be good for backing up everything or checking things one last time before taking it for service.

How would you do that? Unfortunately, this can get tricky if you haven't thought about one thing in advance. However, when you have a USB keyboard around, it's pretty easy. Just plug a USB keyboard into your Mac.

Even if it's a MacBook, you can connect a USB keyboard to your Mac. This USB keyboard works and you can type. You may already have a USB keyboard from an old Mac or PC lying around.

Or you can ask a friend or neighbor. Many computer users have tons of old USB keyboards lying around. If you don't have access to a USB keyboard at all, then for security reasons you should get one in case this ever happens to you.

The truth is you can get it for even cheaper than $ 10. You can likely find them at flea markets and thrift stores. So keep your eyes peeled and maybe stow away a small USB keyboard for emergencies.

If you have an iMac or another Mac with a standalone keyboard like this one, you already have a wired USB keyboard. But wait! This is a bluetooth keyboard, right. Well, it has a port back here that you might think is just for charging.

But you could actually use it to connect to your Mac and turn it into a wired keyboard. Just take the included USB cable or one that you use to charge your iPhone or iPad or something similar, take that, plug it in, and then plug the USB end into your Mac, and it actually works as a wired connection to the keyboard. This can solve many people's problems.

If you have problems connecting with this keyboard via bluetooth, simply plugging it in will not only allow you to type on the keyboard but also solve the connection problem. When you connect your bluetooth keyboard cable to your Mac, the keyboard should remember the keyboard even if you disconnect it and connect it to bluetooth. Now let me show you another method, but one that requires you to set something up beforehand.

I go to the system settings and then to users & groups. Then I go to the login options and authenticate by clicking the padlock and entering my password. Now I'll turn on the Accessibility and Accessibility Keyboard options.

This will bring up the accessibility keyboard when you are on the login screen. Click on Apply. Now I'm signing out to show you how it works.

So you can see that when the Accessibility Keyboard option is enabled on the login screen, that onscreen keyboard appears here. I could make sure I can type into this box here and enter the keys to enter the password by clicking my mouse. You can access the accessibility keyboard even if it is disabled.

But only with the keys on the keyboard. You can use the command option and F5. Options appear that allow you to enable the accessibility keyboard.

You can see the keyboard shortcuts for the accessibility here. You can activate the accessibility keyboard and it even does it on the login screen. But of course your keyboard needs to work to use the F5 command option.

So it works in situations where some keys on your keyboard may not work and others. As long as you can execute command option F5, you can get to the accessibility keyboard. Once you have the Accessibility Keyboard open, you can use the mouse to enter any character.

To check the three things you can do if you can't use your keyboard during the login screen: 1) Get a cheap USB keyboard. Plug that in. 2) Take the Apple keyboard you may already have and use the Lightning connector to turn it into a wired keyboard. 3) You should have enabled the accessibility keyboard for the login screen before the problem occurred.

There is another option. You can use Screen Share to let one Mac take control of another Mac's screen. On this first Mac, you can use the keyboard there to enter characters.

However, you need to enable screen sharing on the broken Mac first. It's easier to turn on the Accessibility feature to see the keyboard on the screen. This is actually a decent option if this happens to you on occasion.

Maybe you have a third party keyboard that sometimes doesn't work on the login screen. The Accessibility Keyboard lets you use your trackpad or mouse to enter your password and get to the settings you need to fix the problem using the Accessibility Keyboard, even if you haven't selected it in advance.
