You know I found one of the main culprits. That, of course, is caching hard drives in third-party browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. In some situations, those browser caches were writing hundreds of gigabytes of data to my internal SSD every hour.
In this article, I'll show you how to use the browsers - Disable disk cache functionality in these third party browsers and discuss what impact this could have on your usage. Spoiler warning, it's not that great. It is important to note that excessive caching of browser hard drives is only really a problem Problem is when you watch or stream a lot of article content like YouTube articles or Twitch streams say a lot, I mean hours every day.
You probably don't need to worry about these steps for normal use. For streaming article content or YouTube, in the example I mentioned in my last article, these caching processes actually write and buffer the article to your internal SSD instead of RAM to ensure that it can be played on RAM, Internet - or system problems run smoothly. This is a perfectly normal feature of many browsers and even occurs on Windows PCs.
In contrast to many Windows PCs, the SSD on your Macis is soldered to the logic board and cannot be replaced in the event of a failure. This is especially important for people who have a base model 256 gigabyte SSD due to the lower capacity and thus a lower TBW. It wears out faster from excessive data writing than a 512 gigabyte SSD or a terabyte SSD, for example.
Although, as I said, it takes a long time no matter how much data you write to your SSD. If you want to limit how much data these browsers write to your internal hard drive SSD, I'm going to show you how to disable different browsers. The first thing you need to do is get into the Activity Monitor, and then you want to get into the 'Storage' tab and then you want to right click on that bar and select the Bytes Written function. And that's actually what is shown here.
This will h. show how many bytes in total were written to your internal SSD by this service or app. You can see here that Safari is open for some work and that much Safari is written in about 12 hours.
There are a few more Safari services down here, but that's really not much. As I mentioned in my last article, Safari doesn't cache a lot. It doesn't write articles or anything like that.
So right by default, it's way better than those third-party browsers. But as I'll show you in a moment, you can activate this function in the other browsers as well. What does a browser look like when it actually writes cached article files? Your internal SSD? Well let's open Google Chrome and go to a 4K article here and we will skip the ad and we will set it to 4K and we will play that and then we will do what we are going to do to go to the activity monitor and you will be able to see something called the Google Chrome Browser Helper here in a second I have Google Chrome there.
What I'm actually going to do is just look for it. So 'Chrome', you can see the Google Chrome Helper here. And you can see here that the written value in bytes is actually increasing pretty quickly.
it's about 10 to 15 megabytes per second here. And it might not look like much now, but if you do this 4, 5, 6, 7 hours a day, it could be hundreds and hundreds of gigabytes being written to your internal SSD every single day like you mine seen previous articles. So what we're going to do is pause and close this article.
And what we can do now is we actually start disabling the caches on these browsers. We'll start with Chrome, Brave, and Opera, and the reason I mentioned all of these browsers together is because they are all very similar. They are almost identical as they are all Chromium based, the only difference between these Chromium based browsers is that the developers just went about them a little differently, but in their strength e, they are essentially identical which is good for us, since the same command actually allows us to turn off the streaming media caching setting in browser bar.
And we are going to hit Enter on the keyboard. Now this works exactly the same for all of those Chromium based browsers. And what you want to do is, come here to disable caching streaming media to disk.
You want to set this to 'enabled'. So you actually want to disable that and we'll reboot, and what we're going to do now is that you can obviously see that it's enabled, that we don't cache media to disk. We'll come back to YouTube.
We're going to the same 4K article and we're going to make sure it plays in 4K, yes it is. By the way, the reason I play it in 4Ks just so we can see a bigger difference than 1080p on Activity Monitor, and what you'll find here is that the Google Chrome Helper actually reloads because we obviously restarted. And you can see here, instead of going up 15-20 Mbps, that actually doesn't change at all you know, we just turned off the browser's ability to cache those particular articles and write them to your disc.
So this is Google Chrome, but what about Brave and Opera? Well I'll show you Brave. It's exactly the same step again. You just want to copy and paste this particular command into the search bar above.
You want to change this to 'enabled' and then just restart the browser and change that setting for you, very easy. One thing I'll mention though is that you only come back here every now and then and check it out because sometimes when you update the app or change some settings, sometimes Google Chrome or Braveor whatever will actually spin this will reset to the default settings. So make sure you check it out every now and then, or better yet.
Perhaps every few days or every few weeks if you are concerned about excessive data being written to your SSD, return to the Storage tab and see how many bytes have been written to all the apps you are using just to keep an eye on them when you are worried. Switching to Firefox is a little more involved, but still not a major problem. Look for 'about: config' in the address bar.
You want to press Enter. You want to take the risk and go ahead and you want to come here and look for 'browser.cache.disk' You want to come here to activate the browser cache disk and you actually want to toggle this to be 'false' is shown.
and you can actually edit this to a really low value, say 500 or even 50. And then it will just severely limit the amount Firefox caches articles o your SSD. I don't use this personally, you can if you want, personally I just set it to false.
And there is another attitude that is popular with other people. If we just come back above and delete the word discand we just put it on browser.cache, and then we type in '.memory'.
You can see here that there is a setting called 'Enable browser cache memory' that we can turn off. It just means that Firefox cannot cache this information in your RAM. So it might actually be good if you want to do a lot in Firefox but also want to multitask.
You can come here and set this to 'false,' and that will severely limit Firefox's RAM memory, but this is at the expense of, sometimes websites load slower or you may need to refresh the page more frequently, so what I personally do is just going to change this to true or maybe even to false and use the browser as normal. And if you notice any problems you can just come back to h ere and toggle it back to true. Unfortunately, when you switch to Edge, Edge doesn't really have a feature in Edge that lets you change the browser disc cache write setting.
So you have to go to the Finder, go to the top left corner, click that button, on your keyboard you want to hold down the Option key. And you can see when I hold the option key it shows the hidden library. So you want to keep holding down the option key, click on library, you want to get into caches.
You will come to the very bottom and you want to go into Microsoft Edge. You want to go into Standard Mode and then you want to go to this Cache folder here, you want to select it, you want to right click on it, you will click on Get Info, and then you want to come down here and the permission in 'Only Read 'change when you want to quit that, close everything, and when you open Edge and watch articles it won't be deleted when you save those articles to your internal SSD. Well, one thing I'll especially mention about Edge is that sometimes you actually get into the cache's folder and empty and clear all of those caches.
If you've seen any of my articles on how to actually speed up a really slow Mac, if you have problems, or if you use CleanMyMac from time to time it clears all the folders in the caches, then you need to go back to Microsoft Edge, go back into standard mode and then just make sure this cache folder, click on it, get info and make sure the permission is set to read only. So, let's quickly talk about downsides. For me personally, I really haven't seen a lot of downsides, you may notice a small drop in performance, for example maybe a little more slack when watching articles or when you leave a particular article.
Say, for example, when you pause it and come back an hour later, or when you put your Mac to sleep p and wake it up when you've watched a article or when you've played halfway through a article and it's already on If it is poorly buffered, you may need to update it; it was either written to RAM, which is temporary storage, or it was not written at all. But again, that's really no big deal, especially if your internet speed is pretty good. You can see a very slight increase in RAM usage.
So whatever YouTube article or Twitch stream you're watching may use up a little more of your RAM. But again, in my testing and use, I didn't really notice that this has a big problem. I tested this briefly in my previous article.
So I really don't think it's going to be a big deal. Browser isn't strictly required. It's only when you're really, really worried about writing tons of unnecessary data to your internal SSD.
And only if you have a very have small SSD capacity, e.g. B.
