Today I want to share some of the problems my computers ran into while upgrading to Windows 10. The problems I'm going to talk about all happened on one device, but upgrading some of my other devices ran into some of the same problems, and therefore they may be the same problems you run into the day you run Windows was published publicly, I logged into my computer and nothing. I was hoping to be among the early upgrade waves so I was a little disappointed with the lack of an update, but then I realized that an ISO file will likely be available and so a quick google led me to the page where I was able to download the Media Creation Utility, I downloaded the tool and something happened.

After getting over the initial shock of such a useful error message, I Googled 'Something Happened'. I found out that many people suggested changing the region on my computer to United States in the Region and Language settings I made, but something else happened. I pondered the problem and it occurred to me that the media creation utility would likely download the relevant files through the same system that Windows Update downloads its updates to; Windows Update also has a section that says My copy of Windows 10 was reserved so it appears that Windows Update was actually linked to the upgrade process, but then I noticed that the Windows Update program was unable to download available updates.

Some serious Google searches led me to the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, or BITS, the underlying technology for downloading updates that appeared to be corrupted in some way. Luckily I found this website mentioning the registry key could be lost so I opened regedit and in fact the key was missing. I added it and Windows Update came to life downloading and installing any currently pending updates.

After all the updates were installed, after restarting my computer, I tried the Media Creation Utility again and was successful. It started by downloading the Windows 10 ISO file. I mounted the ISO file on a USB stick and started the installation process which went smoothly until it stopped working.

After restarting the computer, I was greeted with this error message telling me that the boot drive had failed the upgrade, so I went back to Google. This time the answer was to assign a drive letter to a 100 megabyte partition on my hard drive that I didn't even know existed in the length of a log file to ensure there was enough space for the upgrade. Just a note on this step that wasn't covered on the webpage I used for this solution; When trying to access the boot folder I had to type the path in the address bar so in this case it was 'Y: Boot' it didn't really show up as a folder as you'd expect and so I still did once the installation process and this time no problems at all Windows 10 installed properly without error messages.

After a quick look around I checked the system page to make sure my installation was activated properly and of course I had decided beforehand that after the upgrade I actually wanted to do a fresh install and when I knew that When my Windows key was properly activated, I started the reinstallation. If you want to do a clean install, be careful before you begin. Most importantly, you'll need to do an in-place upgrade from Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to activate your Windows 10 key as valid before you can actually do a clean upgrade or Microsoft won't recognize your computer as a a real copy of Windows.

Of course, it is also important that you back up any of your files that you want to keep, otherwise they will be deleted in the process. Finally, it's probably a good idea to write down any programs that you plan to reinstall afterwards, and make sure you have all of the information you will need to reinstall, such as: B. Make sure you have the keycodes for any programs you are going to reinstall after you've already activated Windows 10, the clean installation process was extremely smooth.

Just one interesting point, during the installation process I deleted the 100 megabyte system partition mentioned above and allowed the installation to create a new partition. However, this time the partition was 500 megabytes, so Microsoft is obviously aware that 100 megabytes is not enough. Another problem I encountered on another computer was that the upgrade process failed because I didn't have the latest drivers for the Nvidia graphics cards on the computer.

However, downloading and installing the latest drivers from the Nvidia website was sufficient to resolve this issue. Hopefully all of these issues will be resolved if Microsoft reacts to the feedback it gets from people going through the upgrade process, but I wanted to make this available in case it helps others. How was the upgrade process for you? Did this article help you upgrade? Let me know in the comments and don't forget to subscribe!

Most of the people watching this article probably just went to the Settings app, went to Software Update, and had a problem. You can also use a computer. We're going to walk you through the gamut of fixes and there are a number of different ways you can go about fixing this issue.

For 90% of people what we talk about will fix the problem right away, the other 10% need to do a DFU restore and we will help you with that too. What's the first? - First, all you have to do is make sure Your iPhone is actually compatible with the new iOS update. Every year a couple of phones just don't make the cut, so in the description section below we leave a link to the phones that are current and compatible with the latest iOS update - and if so yes time for a new phone, what it could be if your phone isn't on this list, visit UpPhone.com/phones, it's our website and you can n compare any phone in the US- yes if your iPhone is compatible with the new iOS update, we will perform a hard reset.

Why are we doing a hard reset instead of a normal restart? - Because sometimes small software issues can occur that cause iPhones to have difficulty updating. How do we do that? - To hard reset an iPhone 8 or later, press and release the volume up button, then press and release the volume down button. Then press and hold the side button if you press and hold the screen will go black, the Apple logo will appear, and you can release the side button.

If you have an iPhone seven, it's the side button and the volume button. Just hold them down at the same time until you see the Apple logo. Sometimes it can take 25 to 30 seconds for this to actually happen.

So be patient and pause, don't give up early. - Right, and then you can let go. Especially if there is a software problem, it can take a long time - yes. - What's next? - Next, make sure you have enough space for the iOS update.

These updates can be one and a half, two gigabytes. The iOS 14.5 update on my phone was 5.7 gigabytes, which felt kind of tall.

Yes, it used to be one and a half or two. Now they're getting, yeah, crazy big - let's go to Settings, tap General, tap iPhone Storage. And here you can see how much space you have left.

I used 46.3 gigabytes of 64, so that's about 18 gigabytes. That should be enough for an iOS update. - Absolutely, good math, David. - While you're here, if your iPhone is stuck on update and stuck verifying or prepping, come over here and look for iOS 14.5, 14.6, 15 and just tap on it then delete and go back and download download and reinstall the update.

This is where a lot of people can get stuck when it is checked or prepared. And just start over. - Yeah, exactly.

It's not that you can come in there and tell him to go ahead. That's how you do it Actually, David had the problem the other day - I had this problem the other day - Yeah, and you fixed it - I have. - 'Hey!' (Audience cheers) - Next, try a different update method.

Perhaps you have just tried your computer. Well, now try it on the iPhone. If you go to Settings and then tap General, choose the main Settings page here.

Tap General, tap Software Update, and then tap Download and Install if an iOS update is available. - Right, and if you've already tried it, it's time to use a computer. Each computer doesn't have to be yours.

Because iTunes or Finder is just a tool in this scenario. So if you have a Mac that is running Mac OS 10.15 or later, use the Finder PC, or Mac that is 10.14 or earlier, use iTunes.

Try updating your iPhone this way. - If you are using your computer to update your iPhone, try another frayed lightning cable and then its connection might give some problems and then it won't update if it can't connect cleanly and go through the whole process - Yes , it's cool that they put the over-the-air software updates in, although most of the people watching this article had an issue with the over-the-air software updates, which means that it just happens on the phone. Because there are so many variables with PCs and Macs, like cables, like USB ports, would be a problem.

Try another computer, try the phone. What's next? - Yeah, and if you're using a PC, watch out for that antivirus software - Right, and we won't even go into how to fix this. Yeah, watch out. - Pay attention - We can include a link to this article - Perfect, we will leave a link to it in the description section of this article.

Next, check out Apple's servers. This is really only an issue with major iOS updates. iOS 15 but everyone tries to download the new big update all at once and Apple's servers just can't handle it sometimes - Yeah, can you believe that? That can really happen at any time.

Sometimes they just do it to get traffic to the Apple Store when they stop selling enough stuff - Yep. - Just turn off the servers. But you can check that they are turned off. - Yes. - How do we do this? - Well we leave the link in the description section below to the Apple system status page - System status page.

One of the less visited sites - Make sure the dots are green. If the dots are if you made it this far and your iPhone still won't update, back it up - Back it up as we'll have to get a little more invasive with the fixes. You can either back up your iPhone to iCloud, which I think is the easiest way to go, or to a computer.

Same deal as before with Finder on the newer Macs or iTunes on the older Macs and PCs. Then we're done. All settings will be reset. - Yes, this will reset everything to factory settings in the Settings app.

Your Wi-Fi passwords are gone. Bluetooth devices, they're gone. Really, it's kind of annoying, but that fixes an ongoing software problem. - Right, and if you're really, really annoyed, you can just restore from backup afterward, which is more annoying.

But you won't have anything to do with East. So yes, resetting all settings can solve things. It's a silver bullet for software problems like updates that don't work. - Yes so let's tap back to General, top left corner of the scroll all the way down and tap Reset, then tap Reset All Settings, enter your passcode.

A confirmation pop-up window appears with the message: 'Are you sure you want to reset all settings?' Tap on Reset all settings, the reset happens, your iPhone is switched off and on again. We have done it before. I'm not doing it now - No, why should we now? If we didn't do the Reset All Settings work, it's time to put your iPhone in DFU mode.

But before you do that, here's a quick warning. - Right, first please subscribe to our YouTube channel. Besides the technical side of things, it can help is you need to be careful before performing a DFU recovery that will remove everything from your phone and put it back in again.

Because if your iPhone is damaged in any way, sometimes DFU recovery will fail and you will end up with a bricked iPhone. So it just doesn't work. So be very careful before doing this.

There should be absolutely no problem with a DFU restore and your iPhone will be updated. You can watch our article on how to restore your iPhone using DFU. We will add some links in the description section below. -Yes, but especially if you are about to drop your iPhone in a lake or drop it on the concrete and run over it with your car, then maybe the DFU recovery, kind of scary. -Yes.

Do not do it. Don't do it and blame us - Don't blame us - There's a reason we added this warning to this article and because we didn't have it in other articles - Yes, well, and then If you are a little concerned: Apple Store Punch, make an appointment, or call or online. There are a lot of good options - yes, so different Wi-Fi networks, everything else.

Just try different things until this works. And at some point your iPhone will be updated. - Unless it's incompatible. -Unless it was incompatible with ...- and you're not looking at that point anyway.

Thanks for watching this article. Those of you who are still at it, give it a thumbs up if you enjoyed it. Please subscribe - Please. - We really appreciate it.
