Hey guys and welcome to the show, if you were here last week you remember we made this little Appel Mike for about two dollars. Click here to watch this episode, this week we're going to move on to the budget movie gear by making a small cardioid mic that you can plug in people's faces aka stick mic okay let's go you'll get your mic need we used one from the rock band you will also need solder and a soldering iron a three and a half millimeter headphone jack and our parts bin we had two cables one already attached so we will only use that, you will also need a tube of paint ring if you don't have that, you can't use electrical tape if you use heat shrink tubing you'll need a lighter to heat it up and as always my favorite multitool now it's time to get your microphone ready my name attached this box i didn't tint so she just cut it off and now uses your multitool to dispose of the insulation tion from the rock ribbon cable that exposes the two wires inside, take the unshielded wire and start twisting it. You will need to do this for tinning later.
Now take a little bit off the top of the shielded wire and start twisting it to make sure you cut the wire long enough for you to play with some heat shrink tubing now it's time to grab your soldering iron. Start tinning both the positive and negative wires on your rock band microphone now let's hear the other side I didn't have to buy new jacks as I found a wire in my parts bin that already had the end of the required same thing peel off the insulation to reveal the two wires inside. If you saw my pc mic hack last week, you'll find that our cable we are using had three wires inside, but it was easy to bypass yours Solder iron again and start tinning each side Now it's time to shut this patient down, take your knife and cut some heat shrink tubing through whoa White Mage what are you doing here? e silly out of the way when my cat decided it didn't want to help I grabbed my heat shrink tubing and slid down the cable I also cut a smaller piece to replace the missing shield and put it on top of the cable, now it is Time to grab the soldering iron again.Take the two shielded wires and solder them together, then you can slide your heat shrink tubing up over the missing insulation, use your letter and shrink it to the right, grab the soldering iron and start soldering the other side together.
Now take the longer piece of heat shrink tubing and slide it over it.It was all a pretty tight fit so I had to train for a while but I managed to get it now take your lighter and start heating up the heat shrink tubing this will give it a nice fit You are now done hacking your rock band microphone so that the microphone is done I am probably wondering how it sounds. I actually use this mic to narrate my last two builds, so you've heard it by wondering how this is? Noise canceling works let's go to our correspondent Jamie who's on the streets Jamie thanks Jamie, I'm standing here on a busy street to give you an idea of how the rock band work and now the rock band microphone is now my guest here today Jerry Jerry Would you like to say a few words No? Oh finepupernickel what I alone thank jarredback to you Jamie, thank you Jamie, I notice the micro looks a bit different than your structure what is that kind of windsock on top of that so I built this windsock this windsack is quite literally an old sports sock, yeah look at that Now look at this as we walk by, it gives you an idea of what's going on, thank you Jamie, that was Jamie reporting him out and his guest was shocked today as you can hear me Cut out a lot, but that's to be expected if you're just using a small bargain recorder like this one that has no display on the screen and even with this little guy you can't adjust the levels either like we were and that for a big one Part of the clipping was responsible, although we were standing right next to each other and could hardly hear each other.
The microphone blocked out a large part of the outside noise. Our demo nstration gave you an idea of what this microphone can do and I hope this gives you some ideas that you might have a few things around the house that would be good for your filmmaking, thanks for watching the guys. Don't forget to tune in next week if you find out I do a lot more than just filmmaking tutorials and see camping seasons in full swing why don't we do some camping tutorials until next week Hey guys and welcome to the show today, we're going to be build a noise canceling microphone that you can use in traffic.
Keep in mind that you'll want to upgrade this mic soon you can, but until you can afford this gear this will definitely stay in your filmmaker bag with supplies for you even if my advice goes back to you Jamie
